The BORSCHT Film Festival is a semi-annual film festival held in Miami, Florida. The festival's mission is "to commission and showcase films by emerging artists that tell Miami stories going beyond the typical portrayal of a beautiful but vapid party town, forging the cinematic identity of the city."[1]
The BORSCHT Film Festival is a non-profit Miami-based organization dedicated to commissioning and showcasing films that tell Miami stories by young professional Miami artists. They don’t just screen films, they create them.
Every year, using a combination of awards, grants, and tax-deductible donations, BORSCHT green-lights between six and twelve short films—then throws Miami’s cinematic event of the year to showcase them. Equal parts film festival, cultural event, production company, outreach program, and party, the BORSCHT Film Festival is held at iconic Miami venues like the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts (2011), the Gusman Center for the Performing Arts (2009), and the Tower Theater (2008).
Mission
BORSCHT's mission is simple: BORSCHT inspires collaboration between members of the idiosyncratic generation who were born in the 80's and came of age with the city itself.
It is one of the local-driven art events that emerged in post Art Basel Miami, and has been referred to as "Miami's alt-culture summit"[2] and "Miami's Best Film Festival."[3]
Many of BORSCHT's films have gone on to screen at Cannes Film Festival, Tribeca Film Festival, Sundance Film Festival, and at the Guggenheim Museums in New York City, Bilbao, Venice, and Berlin.
History
The festival was founded by a group of New World School of the Arts students in 2004.[4]
