Boxed is a wholesale shopping app for iOS and Android. The app includes products in six categories; household, health and beauty, grocery, odds and ends, kids and diapers, and organic products. The app was launched in June 2013. Boxed has expanded and now can be accessed online where shopping is made easier for people of all ages because it is not only limited to the app. [1]
Fortune magazine described Boxed the "Costco of mobile apps." [2]
Overview
Since Boxed prices are wholesale, customer can save 25-50% on the majority of products compared to some stores.[3] Boxed does not include a membership fee like other wholesale companies such as Costco and Sam's Club.[4]
Boxed users get "rewards points" for each purchase. If a customer reaches 500 points, he or she can apply a $5 credit to an order. Boxed also has a referral program where customers can get Boxed credits after a friend they refer makes their first purchase.[5]
Boxed's CEO told Fortune that "millions of people have tried the app."[2]
Company
Boxed's headquarters is located Edison, New Jersey. Boxed was founded by Antony Yang, Yi-fu Wu, Christopher Cheung, William Fong, and Chieh Huang in 2013. As of January 2015, Boxed had just under 30 employees and three warehouses. Chieh Huang serves as the CEO of the company. DJ Williams is the Director of Partnerships and the ambassador of Quan for the Company. William Reed and Keith Lyons are the managers from Sundays to Wednesdays.
Funding
In May 2014, Boxed received $6.5 million in Series A round financing led by Greycroft Partners.[3] After another round of funding led by GGV Capital and Digital Sky Technologies, the company raised a total of $33 million USD in venture funding.[2]
