Boyden–Hull High School is the only public high school located in Hull, Iowa, United States. Their mascot is the Comet. The school's athletic teams compete in the Siouxland Conference. Two private secondary schools are also located within the Boyden–Hull Community School District, Western Christian and Trinity Christian.

History

Boyden and Hull were separate school districts until 1959.[3] The first classes as a consolidated school district took place on August 31, 1959.[4] Hull High School's athletic teams were known as the Wild Cats.[9] Before the merger, Hull's basketball team had been to the state playoffs five times.[10][11] Boyden Public School's mascot was the Bombers.[9]

Technology and services

Smart Boards were first installed in 2007.[12] A one to one computing initiative was started in the 2011-12 school year,[13][14] as was the school's use of Moodle.[15] The district shares some classes with the nearby Rock Valley High School and George-Little Rock High School through polycom videoconferencing technology.[16][17] Online classes are available for dual high school and college credit though Northwest Iowa Community College. A school resource officer was assigned to the district beginning with the 2010 school year.[18]

Facilities

Most of the school building was remodeled in the 1980s.[19] The auditorium was renovated in July 2013 and reopened in time for the 2013-14 school year.[20] The gymnasium was refurbished in 2015.[21]

The football and track facilities at A. R. Hesla Field are shared with Western Christian.[22]

Extracurricular activities

The STORM (Students Teaching Others Role Modeling) Team was organized in the late 1990s.[23] The student organization is mainly active around Red Ribbon Week and also volunteers at the local chapter of the Ronald McDonald House.[24] Boyden-Hull Summer Theatre began in 2009.[25]

Athletics

The men's basketball team has appeared in the Iowa High School Athletic Association tournament sixteen times since 1971,[26][27] with titles in 2003,[28][29] 2012,[30][31] and 2013.[32][33] Former coach Paul Walton compiled a 350–130 record over 26 years[34] and was inducted into the Iowa High School Basketball Hall of Fame in 2001.[35] In 1990, a sport-sharing agreement was struck with Rock Valley.[36] Sports currently shared include football, wrestling, baseball, track and field, cross country, and softball. Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley is collectively known as the Nighthawks. Before the sport was shared with Rock Valley, Boyden-Hull tied West Harrison for a men's state track title in 1970.[37] The women's track team's highest finish was in 1984. They tied Le Mars Gehlen for second place.[36] The Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley football team made it to the championship game in 2009, falling to Solon High School.[38] The Comet volleyball team has been to state twice, in 1991 and 2011.[39][40]
