Bria Skonberg is a Canadian trumpet player, vocalist and composer.[1]
Skonberg was born in Chilliwack, British Columbia. She took piano lessons in elementary school, switching to trumpet in Grade 7 and went on to graduate from the jazz program at Capilano University.[1] Skonberg was the leader of the Vancouver-based groups Bria’s Hot Five and The Big Bang Jazz Band. She also performed with Dal Richards and his Orchestra in concert and on recordings. She was a co-founder of the all-female jazz group Mighty Aphrodite Jazz Band.[2] Skonberg has appeared as a band leader and guest artist at jazz festivals in North America, Europe, China and Japan. She moved to New York City in 2010.[1] She was a co-founder of the New York Hot Jazz Festival.[3]
Skonberg has performed with Bucky Pizzarelli, Howard Alden[2] and Wycliffe Gordon. She has studied with Warren Vache.[4]
She received the CBC Jazz Award of Merit in 2006. In 2007, she received the Kobe Jazz Street Award at the Breda Jazz Festival.[2] Skonberg received a New York Bistro Award for Outstanding Jazz Artist and, in 2015, a Swing! Award from Jazz at Lincoln Center. She also received four Hot House Jazz Awards.[1]
