Bungo Stray Dogs (文豪ストレイドッグス Bungō Sutorei Doggusu, lit. Literary Stray Dogs) is a Japanese manga series written by Kafka Asagiri and illustrated by Sango Harukawa, which has been serialized in the magazine Young Ace since 2012. A television anime adaptation by Bones will be split into two parts, with the first part beginning on 7 April 2016, and the second part premiering in October 2016.
Plot
The story of Bungo Stray Dogs centers around individuals who are gifted with super natural powers and use them for different purposes including holding a business, solving mysteries, and carrying out missions assigned by the mafia. The story mainly follows the members of the "Armed Detective Agency" and their everyday lives. Each character is named after famous literary authors and/or characters in their works including Ryūnosuke Akutagawa, Yukito Ayatsuji, Dan Brown, Agatha Christie, Osamu Dazai, Fyodor Dostoyevsky, Rampo Edogawa, Natsuhiko Kyogoku, Kenji Miyazawa, Doppo Kunikida, and Akiko Yosano.[1][2]
Characters
Armed Detective Agency
- Atsushi Nakajima (中島 敦 Nakajima Atsushi)
- Voiced by: Yūto Uemura, Lynn (child)
- Main protagonist of the series. His ability is named Beast Beneath the Moon and makes him transform into a white tiger, however, he has no control over this ability. He constantly finds himself bewildered by the antics of his co-workers. Because his whole he was called useless, he suffers from a lack of confidence that only started to change when he joined the Agency.
- Osamu Dazai (太宰 治 Dazai Osamu)
- Voiced by: Mamoru Miyano
- A member of the Armed Detective Agency who takes Atsushi under his wing. With a carefree attitude, he's constantly trying to commit suicide, only to fail every time. His ability is called No Longer Human, that allows him to cancel any ability by touch. He used to be part of Port Mafia, but refuses to tell his coworkers.
- Doppo Kunikida (国木田 独歩 Kunikida Doppo)
- Voiced by: Yoshimasa Hosoya
- Dazai's partner, who always gets angry at his antics. A former math teacher, he always writes and plans every second of his day ahead, so he hates unplanned events and wasting his time. His ability is called Lone Poet, and allows him to bring into existence any object he writes in his notebook as long as it isn't bigger than the notebook itself.
- Junichirō Tanizaki (谷崎 潤一郎 Tanizaki Jun'ichirō)
- Voiced by: Toshiyuki Toyonaga
- A member of the Agency around the same age as Atsushi. His ability is called Light Snow, which allows him to project illusions within a certain area. While he dislikes his sister's antics, he goes on an uncontrollable rage if someone harms her.
- Ranpo Edogawa (江戸川 乱歩 Edogawa Ranpo)
- Voiced by: Hiroshi Kamiya
- The self-proclaimed only detective in the Agency. He dislikes any trivial knowledge, like knowing how to ride a train or returning to the Agency. He calls his skill Super Deduction, but he actually doesn't have any supernatural power, he's simply very smart and observant.
- Kenji Miyazawa (宮沢 賢治 Miyazawa Kenji)
- Voiced by: Hiroyuki Kagura
- Akiko Yosano (与謝野 晶子 Yosano Akiko)
- Voiced by: Yū Shimamura
- The medic of the Armed Detective Agency. Her ability is called Thou Shalt Not Die, which allows her to heal others and even herself, as long as they are half dead to begin with.
- Naomi Tanizaki (谷崎 ナオミ Tanizaki Naomi)
- Voiced by: Chiaki Omigawa
- Junichirō's sister, whom is very clingy and knows everything about him. She's not an ability user.
- Yukichi Fukuzawa (福沢 諭吉 Fukuzawa Yukichi)
- Voiced by: Rikiya Koyama
Port Mafia
- Ryūnosuke Akutagawa (芥川 龍之介 Akutagawa Ryūnosuke)
- Voiced by: Kenshō Ono
- A member of Port Mafia, he's constantly coughing for an unknown reason. His ability is called Rashomon, a coat that turns into a black beast, which can tear everything apart, even space.
- Chūya Nakahara (中原 中也 Nakahara Chūya)
- Voiced by: Kishō Taniyama
- Ichiyō Higuchi (樋口 一葉 Higuchi Ichiyō)
- Voiced by: Asami Seto
- Member of Port Mafia and subordinate of Akutagawa, who she admires. She lacks an ability but compensates it with her fighting skills.
- Motojirō Kajī (梶井 基次郎 Kajī Motojirō)
- Voiced by: Wataru Hatano
- Kyōka Izumi (泉 鏡花 Izumi Kyōka)
- Voiced by: Sumire Morohoshi

Manga
Kafka Asagiri and Sango Harukawa began publishing the manga in Kadokawa Shoten's seinen magazine Young Ace in 2012.[1] Kadokawa has compiled the series into nine tankōbon volumes.

Anime
An anime adaptation from animation studio Bones will be directed by Takuya Igarashi and written by Yōji Enokido.[1] Nobuhiro Arai and Hiroshi Kanno serve as the chief animation directors, while the former also serves as character designer along with Ryō Hirata. Taku Iwasaki composes the series' music. Kazuhiro Wakabayashi is the series' sound director at Glovision. Additionally, Yumiko Kondou is the art director, Yukari Goto is the anime's color designer, Tsuyoshi Kanbayashi is the director of photography, and Shigeru Nishiyama is the editor.[15] Granrodeo will perform the anime's opening theme, titled "Trash Candy",[16][17] and Luck Life will perform the anime's ending theme, titled "Namae o Yobu yo" ((名前を呼ぶよ, Call Out The Name).[18]
The series will have a split season: the first half, containing twelve episodes, premiered on 7 April 2016,[lower-alpha 1][17] and is being broadcast on Tokyo MX, TVS, CTC, tvk, GBS (Gifu Broadcasting), Mie TV, SUN, TVQ Kyushu, and BS11.[19] The second half will premiere in October 2016.[17] The series has been licensed for streaming by Crunchyroll.[20]
An OVA will also be released.[21]
