Reason for Joining
Hindustan times writes in detail the way Burhan Joined the separatist movement, even those who know Wani say an assault by the security forces on his brother Khalid led him (Wani) to join militancy. "Some cops had stopped the two brothers (then teenagers) to buy cigarettes. Just to derive some pleasure, one of them pounced on Khalid, calling him a dreaded militant. The shock had left Khalid, a teenager, unconscious on ground," a source close to the family said. It was then that Burhan, a studious boy and a budding cricketer, changed his path. He is the son of a school principal from Tral's Shareefabad area in South Kashmir, he is one of the first in a new breed of educated militants coming up in Kashmir. Khalid was killed, allegedly by the security forces, earlier this year when he had gone to meet his brother in the south Kashmir forests.[5]
