Butler railway station is a railway station of the Transperth network. It is the terminus of the Joondalup line, 40.7 kilometres from Perth station serving the suburb of Butler.

History

Construction of the station in the suburb of Butler commenced in 2011, with the station opened on 21 September 2014 by Premier Colin Barnett and Minister for Transport Dean Nalder.[1][2][3][4] The station is 7.5 kilometres north of Clarkson station, the previous terminus of the Joondalup line.[5][6]

The station is a futuristic-looking building, which also incorporates a bus station, and has parking for 930 cars. Other major infrastructure on the project included bridges over the rail tracks at Landbeach Boulevard, Benenden Avenue and the future Butler Boulevard.[1]

A miscalculation about the vibration mitigation required on the last two kilometres of the line has led to extreme vibrations inside nearby homes, with over 180 home-owners having confirmed that they are affected. The problem is due in part to sub-ballast matting not having been installed.[7][8][9]

Prior to construction, residents in the area were advised that sub-ballast matting would be installed under the tracks to minimise vibration in adjacent houses. The project came in $20 million under budget, but the promised matting was not installed in the most densely populated area, where trains runs right next to homes.[10][11][12]

A grievance has been lodged in the Parliament of Western Australia about the vibration problem.[13]
