CNN bias against Israel

CNN has been accused of bias reporting against Israel particularly about the Israel/Palestinian conflict. CNN denies the allegations and some pro Palestinian groups accuse CNN of bias against Palestinians.

History

Since the Clinton era, CNN has been accused of reporting bias against Israel.[1][2][3]

One-sided headlines

One website cites examples of a series of a few weeks of headlines citing Israel attacking Hamas, but during that time period there was not a single headline about Hamas attacking Israel.[2]

Calling Israelis "scum"

CNN International reporter Diana Magnay called Israelis "scum" in a tweet after an altercation in which she was allegedly threatened by a crowd during the 2014 Israel–Gaza conflict. Magnay tweeted that, "Israelis... threaten to 'destroy our car if I say a word wrong'. Scum." [4] CNN refused to take disciplinary action against Magney and reassigned her to Moscow.[5]

Gaza Conflict

During the 2014 Israeli/Hamas war in Gaza, Israel’s U.S. Ambassador appeared on a live CNN show, and began accusing CNN of one-sided reporting. He accused them that during his 2-hour viewing of gruesome images of Palestinian casualties from an Israeli attack on a school in Gaza, CNN has not once mentioned missiles have been found in UNRWA schools, and that the "Secretary General of the United Nations yesterday warned against the use of UN schools and shelter for rocket missile depots of Hamas".[1][3][6][7] During the live confrontation CNN did not respond. However at a later time CNN said that they asked the ambassador to come back to clarify his comments but he refused to come back. CNN then played video of them mentioning rockets in UN schools.[8]

A few days later during another live interview, Ben Shapiro also condemned CNN for the biased reporting and not mentioning the restrictions that Hamas puts on CNN reporters in the Gaza strip.[9][10]

Protests and Petition on CNN's one sided coverage

In 2013 there was a petition on Change.org with 100 signatures for CNN to "Stop the Anti-Israel Bias" citing examples of distorted reporting.

During the 2014 Gaza conflict, hundreds of protestors came to the Time Warner Center where CNN is housed. The protest was against CNN and other media outlets (including NYT) for anti-Israel media bias, ignoring the Israeli side of the conflict and reporting deceitful stories that favor the Palestinian side.[11]

In an interview with TMZ, Joan Rivers slammed CNN and BBC for their biased coverage against Israel.[12]

Jerusalem synagogue massacre

On 18 November 2014, two Palestinians walked into the Kehilat Bnei Torah Synagogue in Jerusalem and killed four Israelis during their prayer. The two were subsequently killed in a fight with police. CNN falsely claimed that the massacre had taken place in a Mosque [13] and reported the death toll as, "four Israelis and two Palestinians," forgetting to mention that they were the perpetrators and were killed fighting with police. CNN later apologized for falsely reporting that the site of the massacre had not been a synagogue.[14]

While acknowledging that the false report was in error, Foreign Ministry spokesman Emmanuel Nachshon claimed that such "tendentious reports and lies are meant to distort the reality, to defame Israel and in practice (if not always by intent) give a back-wind to terror."

CNN Pro Israel

On the other hand, protesters at an anti Israel rally, protested in front of CNN offices against the agency's “biased coverage” of the war on Gaza, and later continued on to Fox News.[15]
