Caiphus Semenya (born on August 19, 1939 in Johannesburg, South Africa) is a South African composer ans musician.[1][2] Semenya left South Africa for Los Angeles in the 1960s, together with his wife, singer Letta Mbulu.[3] Among the artists whom he worked with are Hugh Masekela, Jonas Gwangwa, Hotep Galeta, Miriam Makeba, Lou Rawls, Nina Simone, Cannonball Adderley, and many others.

- 2015: ACT Lifetime Achievement Award for Music[5]
- 1986: Academy Award for Best Original Score for the 1985 film The Color Purple[6]; shared the nomination with nine other composers.
