Carcrash International was the expressive vehicle of Dave Roberts (aka Dave Sex Gang), original bass player of Sex Gang Children, who used the name for two projects.

History

The band made their initial appearance in 1983 on the compilation album “The Whip” [1] with the title track “The Whip” (credited under Dave Sex Gang). The song was performed by Dave Roberts on vocals and guitar, drummer Matthew Best (later of Psychic TV) and guitarist Lester Jones (Crisis). The record also featured a song by Best called “32nd Piano Concerto In A Minor”. Later the same year a new version of “The Whip” was released as single (credited under Carcrash International) and included another track “The White Hotel” along with two mixes of the title track. The band was now expanded with second drummer Nigel Preston and violinist Pip Knapp.

A second 12” single was released in the following year called “All Passion Spent”, backed with “Dial First... (P.O.A.)”. The band was now a three-piece consisting of Roberts, Best and new guitarist Stephanie Paynes. 1985 saw the release of the 12” single “Crash!”, backed with “Mercenaries For War” (a John Cale cover) and “Seduction”. This time Roberts had assembled an all new group and it was the first Carcrash International record without Matthew Best who had now joined Psychic TV.

In 1993 the newly established Cleopatra Records label re-released an expanded version of “The Whip” compilation crediting both “The Whip” and “32nd Piano Concerto In A Minor” as Carcrash International songs.[2] [3] Roberts also formed a new version of the band with various musicians who were also on the Cleopatra Records label. This new version of the band played gothic rock rather than post-punk as the 80s version and was a lot darker. They released their only CD album “Fragments Of A Journey In Hell”, followed by a promotional concert in San Francisco in 1994, with a lineup consisting of Dave Roberts (bass), Ian Haas, the original drummer of London After Midnight (drums), and D.A. (ebow guitar). The album was met with little fanfare at the time and Carcrash International disbanded the following year .

The band has also included studio session musicians Matt Green (Keyboards); Bari-Bari (Guitar), Everett Thompson (played bass on "The Whip" and a few live shows around Hollywood, CA; deceased 2003) and David Glass (Drums), both old Christian Death band members prevailing at the time in the group Mephisto Walz; and included musicians Nicky Garrett and Colin Dminchin at various stages. They were associated with the Batcave scene.

A compilation of the two tracks from “The Whip” album plus a new remix of the title track and “Last Remains” (from the "In Goth Daze" various artists compilation) was released in 2002 in Europe.
