History

Season One

In season 1, Carmen worked under Alejandro Rubio, alongside Odessa Burakov and Sam Alexander. In the beginning of the series, Burakov initially acts harshly towards Carmen. As the season unfolds, their relationship begins to improve. Carmen does not enjoy working as a maid as she feels she is too clumsy for the occupation. As the series develops, she falls in love with Sam who works alongside Carmen. Unfortunately, at the end of the season, he leaves in search of a better life for them, only for their relationship to dissolve. Additionally, Carmen and her friends take it upon themselves to investigate the death of Flora, a former maid who was killed at the Powell's house.[4]

As the season draws to a close, she becomes engaged with Alejandro, in an attempt to hide his homosexuality that proves futile. As a result of his jealous boyfriend, with whom he had separated to marry Carmen, the media was informed of his sexuality, this resulted in the wedding being cancelled.[5][6]

Season Two

The second season premiered on April 20, 2014. The season centers on the mystery story of Opal, the new, 40-something maid, played by Joanna P. Adler. The character is described as "reminiscent of Mrs. Danvers from Hitchcock's Rebecca" and is seen as a threat to Marisol's new relationship with Nicholas.[1] The second season also deals with Rosie working for an African-American family that is scheming to do harm to an elderly man she's hired to act as a caregiver, Zoila dealing with her estrangement from her husband Pablo while her daughter Valentina tries to distance herself from Remi and Zoila while trying to downplay the attention of pool boy Ethan, both of whom, along with a new body guard, Tony, are hired by Adrian and Evelyn Powell in the wake of a series of robberies that leads to deadly consequences for Alejandro, who is killed during their heist at his party, leaving Carmen, who signed a deal to ensure a recording deal in order to keep his homosexuality a secret, back to square one in her quest to become famous.[6]

Season Three

At the beginning of this season, Carmen falls in love with Sebastien.[7] Jacklyn Dussault, the CEO of a music label, is very interested in Carmen's musical ability, and subsequently awards her an exclusive music contract. Carmen starts to record her first album, only to discover that Jacklyn is the wife of the man she has been sleeping with (Sebastien). Jacklyn discovers this also, but refrains from immediately raising this with Carmen. However, when Carmen is interviewed on a TV show for the promotion of her album, Jacklyn reveals a sex-tape of Carmen and Sebastien, causing Carmen to cry and leave the interview in shame. Jacklyn tells Carmen that her album will never be released, and that, as a result of the contract with her label, she cannot sign a contract with any other label for at least five years. She becomes friend with Blanca, to whom she lends a dress for a party, at which Blanca is kidnapped and killed. In the last episode, she discovers that Sebastien was the murderer. Sebastien kidnaps Carmen and proceeds to the Powell's house; having killed Michael Stappord, he turns on the gas to explode the house and, he hopes, kill the Powells. However, fortunately, Sebastien is injured by a punch, allowing Carmen and Mrs Powell to escape from the house. Adrian remains inside and sees his electric sexual toy explode. The episode ends dramatically whilst Adrian and Sebastien remain in the house that they expect to explode imminently.[8]

Trivia

The actress behind this character, Roselyn Sanchez, auditioned for the role of Gabrielle Solis in the ABC television series Desperate Housewives, however the producers thought she wasn't right for the role due to her heavy Puerto Rican accent. However, Sanchez did have a cameo role in the series finale as the new gardener Carlos hires for their house.[9][10]
