Cat Mazza
Cat Mazza is an American textile artist.[1][2] Her work may be referred to as craftivism.[3]
Biography
Cat Mazza has a BFA from Carnegie Mellon University and received her master's degree from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.[4] Her work was included in the exhibition When women rule the world held at the Textile Museum of Canada, Feb. 11-Sept. 7, 2009 and at the Art Gallery of Calgary, Sept. 25, 2009-Jan. 23, 2010.[5] Mazza received many grants including Creative Capital, the Rockefeller Foundation in media arts, MacDowell Colony and the Craft Research Fund.[6] She received a Creative Capital grant in 2012 for her project Knit for Defense[7] and was a presenter at the 2011 conference The Influencers.[8] Mazza was an Eyebeam staff member.[9][10]
Projects
- Knit for Defense 2012 talks about war in film through visual knit stitches. This project is a combination of craft, labor, and combat. It is currently in the permanent collection of the Smithsonian American Art Museum.[11]
- Nike Blanket Petition 2003-present A wide blanket with the Nike logo made by networked craft hobbyists from over 40 countries with the purpose of protesting against Nike sweatshop abuses. MicroRevolt was the organizer of this project. This was on view in the exhibition Disobedient Objects at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, England.[12]
