The Cavan Senior Football Championship is an annual Gaelic Athletic Association club competition between the top Cavan Gaelic football clubs. It was first competed for in 1888. The winners get the Oliver Plunkett Cup and qualifies to represent their county in the Ulster Club Championship and in turn, go on to the All-Ireland Senior Club Football Championship. Cornafean have won the most titles, having been victorious 20 times. The current senior football champions are Kingscourt who defeated Castlerahan in the 2014 decider.

Format

17 teams will contest the Hotel Kilmore Senior Football Championship.

4 teams will play in Preliminary Round(a), with the two winners going through to round 1. The losing two teams in Preliminary Round(a) will then play off, with the winner going through to Round 1 and the loser eliminated from the Championship.

16 teams will compete in Round 1 resulting in 8 winners and 8 losers.

Following Round 1 a further draw will take place. The 8 winners from Round 1 will be drawn against each other to play in Round 2(a) while the 8 losing teams from Round 1 will be drawn against each other in the first of the “back door” draws, Round 2(b).

The 4 winners from Round 2(a) will go through to the quarter final. The four losers from Round 2(b) will be eliminated. The four losers from Round 2(a) will play the four winners from Round 2(b) in Round 3 with the winners from this round going through to the quarter finals. The four losers in Round 3 will be eliminated.

For ease of reference Preliminary Round(a), Rounds 1 & 2(a) are Championship proper while Preliminary Round(b), Rounds 2(b) & 3 are “back door” rounds. From Round 4 on (quarter finals) the competition will be “knock out”. Quarter Final/Semi-final pairings will be based on an open draw.
