Cebu International School (CIS), was founded as the Cebu American School in 1924, and renamed in 1973. It is a co-educational day school, non-profit, non-sectarian institution, governed by a ten-member Board of Trustees. The current legal status of the school is defined in Republic Act No. 9190 (2003). In 2014, CIS celebrated the 90th anniversary of its founding.

From its original location in a villa in Gorordo Avenue, the school moved to Banilad, (opposite Cebu Country Club), and then, in 2000, relocated to the present purpose-built campus in Pit-os, on the northern side of Cebu City.

In School Year 2007-08, Cebu International School attained full international accreditation through the Council of International Schools (CIS), the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC), as well as PAASCU and DepEd accreditation within the Philippines. CIS is a member of the East Asia Regional Council of Overseas Schools (EARCOS). Accreditation teams visited CIS from PAASCU (November 2012) and from CIS/WASC (April 2013), and following the two accreditation visits, Cebu International School's status as an accredited school has been renewed for another five years. The fact that Cebu International School is the only school in the Philippines that is accredited with all three organizations means that it holds a unique position within the spectrum of education offerings in the Philippines, particularly as the only fully accredited international school in the Visayas region.

Cebu International School is an IB World School, offering the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP). In January 2014, after 18 months of preparation and a visit from IBO representatives in November 2013, CIS received authorisation to offer the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP). English is the language of instruction at CIS.
