The Center for Wilderness Safety (CWS) was founded in 2006 by Eagle Scouts Phillip Gardner and Clifton Castleman, as a course project at the Pennsylvania State University. Founded in Sterling, Virginia, CWS now has satellite offices in both Central Pennsylvania and Northern Ohio. CWS primarily has offered wilderness & remote medicine education and certification courses to the Mid-Atlantic US.

CWS provides Wilderness First Aid (WFA), Wilderness Advanced First Aid (WAFA), Wilderness First Responder (WFR), the Wilderness Emergency Medical Technician Module (WEMT), and Wilderness First Responder Recertification courses. CWS also provides custom courses, courses for local, state and federal government agencies as well as the Boy Scouts of America. CWS has trained over 5,000 students.
