The Central Institute of Fisheries Technology (CIFT) is an autonomous organization engaged in research related to fishing and fish processing in India. The institute has its headquarters in Matsyapuri, Willingdon Island, Kochi and is a subsidiary of Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), New Delhi, under the Ministry of Agriculture, India.
Service Profile
The Central Institute of Fisheries Technology (CIFT) was formed in 1954 and started functioning in 1957 from its headquarters in Kochi. It is considered to be the only institute where research facilities are available in all disciplines related to fishing and fish processing.[1] CIFT is an ISO/IEC 17025 NABL accredited and ISO 9001:2008 certified body.
CIFT has been selected as the seat for the establishment of the south zone Zonal Technology Management – Business Planning and Development (ZTM-BPD) Unit for catering to the individual and collective needs of 22 agricultural institutes of ICAR in south India.[2]
Mandate of CIFT
CIFT was formed with a mandate :
- To conduct basic, strategic and applied research in fishing and fish processing.
- To develop designs for fuel efficient fishing vessels and fishing gear for responsible fishing.
- To develop technologies for commercial isolation of bioactive compounds and industrially important products from fish and fishery wastes.
- To design innovative implements and machineries for fishing and fish processing and pilot plants for facilitating commercialization of technologies developed.
- To do advanced research in food safety in fish and fishery products.
- To provide training and consultancy services in fishing and fish processing.

The Institute has 7 divisions that coordinates its activities across various disciplines.

CIFT has four research centers in India.
- Visakhapatanam Research Centre of CIFT, Pandurangapuram, Visakhapatanam, Andhra Pradesh
- Veraval Research Centre of CIFT, Veraval, Gujarat
- Mumbai Research Centre of CIFT, Vashi, Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra
- Burla Research Centre of CIFT, Samnalpur District, Burla, Orissa
Agribusiness Incubator
The Agribusiness Incubator is a service program of ZTM-BPD Unit at CIFT, aimed at providing entrepreneurs and start-ups with new technologies. The program offer shared office services, access to equipment, prototype development support, research assistance and expandable space to entrepreneurs during the initial stages to render their businesses financially viable, self-sustaining and profit making.[2]
The program was awarded a Certificate of Appreciation for the outstanding work on Establishment of Business Incubation Centre and Commercialisation of Technology in Fish Processing by National Agricultural Innovation Project (NAIP), Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR).[3] It also won the National Award for BEST AGRI-BUSINESS INCUBATOR, an award instituted by Network of Indian Agri-Business Incubators (an initiative of ICAR), to recognise the achievements of the Business Planning and Development Units for their performance excellence and the Incubatees for their dedication in setting up successful agribusiness ventures, for the year 2013.[4]

- Food products such as Fish curry in retortable pouches, pickles, smoked Masmin flakes, ready to serve fish curry and Battered and breaded products.
- Energy efficient low cost Effluent Treatment Plants.
- CIFT Turtle Excluder Device (CIFT-TED).
- CIFT Semi-pelagic Trawl System (CIFT-SPTS).
- Large mesh Purse Seine nets.
- Treated Rubber Wood canoe.
- FRP-Coated Rubber Wood canoe.
- Sagarkripa, an innovatively designed and developed fishing vessel.

- Canned tuna with vegetables like babycorn, green peas, broccoli
- Canned fish products with different filling mediums like brine, oil, tomato sauce etc.

- Reduced oxygen packaging (ROP) technologies like Oxygen absorber, sous-vide processing etc.

- Natural edible coating material for enhancing quality of fish
They have also developed coated fish products, speciality products and thermally processed products.
