Certified Business Analysis Professional
The Certified Business Analysis ProfessionalTM (CBAP®) designation is a professional certification from International Institute of Business AnalysisTM (IIBA®), for individuals with extensive business analysis experience. With at least 7500 hours of hands-on BA experience, CBAP® recipients are the elite, senior members of the BA community.[1]
With thousands of individuals all over the world achieving the CBAP® designation since the first Certified Business Analysis exam was held in November 2006, CBAP® recipients are experts in identifying the business needs of an organization in order to determine the best solutions. More and more companies are recognizing the CBAP® designation and the value and expertise these professionals bring to their organizations. Earning an IIBA professional certification offers many benefits to both the individual and the organization employing or engaging them.
The CBAP® exam, based on A Guide to the Business Analysis Body of Knowledge® (BABOK® Guide), is available in English, Japanese and German. The exam is a computer based test with CBT locations all over the world.
Eligibility[2]
To earn the CBAP® certification, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Minimum 7500 hours of BA work experience aligned with A Guide to the Business Analysis Body of Knowledge® (BABOK® Guide) in the last 10 years
- Minimum 900 hours in four of the six knowledge areas
- Minimum 21 hours of Professional Development in the past four years
- Two references from a career manager, client or Certified Business Analysis Professional (CBAP®) recipient
- Signed Code of Conduct
Applicants are expected to review the CBAP® Handbook for complete information on application criteria, fees, and details on how to apply.
The applicant must pass an exam consisting of 150 questions based on the BABOK. The exact score needed to pass the test is not revealed by the IIBA. Only once this exam is certified by the IIBA can the applicant use the CBAP designation.
If you don’t meet the requirements for the CBAP® certification, you may want to consider applying for the Certification of Competency in Business AnalysisTM (CCBA®) certification.
Maintaining CBAP® Status
Certified Business Analysis Professional (CBAP®) Recertification[3]
Individuals who have attained the CBAP® designation must demonstrate an ongoing professional commitment to the business analysis profession by satisfying the CBAP® Recertification program. A CBAP® recipient's certification ends on the third anniversary of the date that they passed their initial certification examination.[4]
There are two reasons for requiring recertification:
- To ensure that the Business Analysis Professional is keeping up with changes in the profession.
- To ensure the Business Analysis Professional contributes to the profession.
The Recertification program supports the ongoing professional development of individuals who have attained the CBAP® designation.
CBAP® Retired Status
Individuals who have attained the CBAP® designation but are no longer earning income from practicing or coaching others in business analysis, but would still like to be recognized as a Certified Business Analysis Professional may apply for the CBAP® Retired Status.[5] This process is defined in the CBAP® Retired Status Policy.
