Chandubi Lake

Chandubi Lake (Pron: ˌʧʌnˈdʊbɪ) is a natural lake located in Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council,Kamrup District, Assam at a distance of 64 kilometers from the city of Guwahati accessible through National Highway 37.[1] The lake is located at the foot of Garo hills surrounded by Assam and Meghalaya. The place is calm and peaceful covered by deep forest, tea garden and small and distinct villages. It is natural sight seeing and picnic spot. This lake attracts sizable amount of migratory birds during winter. The beauty of the lake and its surroundings lays a charm that lures a huge number of tourists who visit the place to relax in the lap of nature.

Geology

This lake formed during 1897 Assam earthquake.During that period the forest went down and became the lake[2]

Tourism

The lake is bestowed with scenic natural beauty. The chief feature of the lake in the state of Assam is the natural lagoon that has been formed in the lake. The lake offers to its visitors the opportunity to go fishing in the waters of the lake. The administrators of the lake have also provided the tourists with the provisions to go rowing in the calm lake waters. The presence of such provisions makes the Chandubi Lake an ideal tourist destination. Adding on to the flavour, tourist can also choose to visit the lake during the changdubi festival in first week of january. In this festival many village people perform their traditional or cultural dance forms. Stalls where you can taste their traditional food also.[3]

Transport

From Guwahati you have to go towards Airport and then up to Mirza Charali or chowk (or police point), from there take left turn towards Dakshin kamrup College and go towards Barihat> Loharghat> Chand dubi or Chandubi lake road. Up to Mirza buses are available but from there you have to take private vehicle to reach the lake. Take food along with you as there is no such provision of food stall near the lake. If you are planning to stay at the government tourist lodge near the lake, must carry full ration including kerosene and petrol. Be careful in doing water activities especially boating as lots of accidents occurs here.[4]
