Chapel Hill High School is a public high school in Douglasville, Georgia. It became the fourth high school in the Douglas County School District when it opened in 1999 and is known in the area for its strong academic performance and athletic teams.

History

Chapel Hill High School opened for the 1999-2000 school year. It was the fourth high school to open in the Douglas County School District due to the overcrowding of Alexander, Douglas County, and Lithia Springs High Schools.

Extracurricular activities

Organizations and activities available to Chapel Hill students include a variety of academic, competitive, and service groups, honor societies, a reading group, competitive marching band, supports an Independent Competitive Drumline group, drama, chorus, student government and yearbook. National student organizations offered at Chapel Hill include FCCLA, DECA, FBLA, SkillsUSA, GCSA, HOSA, National Beta Club, National Honors Society (NHS), Key Club, National French Honors Society, National Spanish Honors Society, Project Manhood, and National Art Honors Society. The school also recently added the Navy Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps (NJROTC) as a curricular and extracurricular activity.

Athletics

Chapel Hill High School's teams are known as the Panthers and compete in the Georgia High School Association AAAA classification, region 5. The school fields teams in baseball, basketball, cheerleading, cross country, fast-pitch softball, football, golf, soccer, swimming, tennis, track and field, volleyball and wrestling.

Fine Arts

Chapel Hill also has a reputable Fine Arts Department. The Chapel Hill Fine Arts Department includes the Chapel Hill Marching Panther Band, Chapel Hill Symphonic Band, Chorus, Drama, and Art. Both Chapel Hill bands have won numerous awards and have attended many band festivals and competitions. The band also supports the independent drumline group West Atlanta Rhythm (WAR). The Chapel Hill Chorus is very reputable throughout the county for their annual Spring Musical, Dessert Theater and Fall Show. Past musicals presented by the chorus include West Side Story (2011)Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (2010), Seussical (2009 and 2005), Cats (2008), Annie (2007), and The Wiz (2006), among others.

Curriculum

Chapel Hill High School is generally known for strong academic performance. CHHS met AYP for the 2007-2008 school year. In 2005, 72% of the student body passed the science section of the GHSGT (Georgia High School Graduation Test), 96% passed the English section, and 95% passed the math section, compared with statewide averages of 68%, 95%, and 92% percent, respectively. Chapel Hill also offers a variety of Advanced Placement courses, which enumerate to be the largest amount of any high school in the county, followed closely by Alexander High.
