Charles E. Johnson (Chuck) is an American businessman. Johnson is the founder and Managing Director of Tano Capital, an Asia focused alternative asset management firm based in San Mateo, California, that invests in early to mid-stage companies. Tano Capital has offices in Singapore, Shanghai, Mumbai, Mauritius and San Francisco Bay Area.[2][3]
Education
Johnson received an M.B.A. from Harvard University in 1985, and a Bachelor of Science degree from UCLA in 1979. He is also certified as a CPA.[1]
Career
Before founding Tano in 2004, Johnson served as co-president of Franklin Resources, Inc. and CEO of Templeton Worldwide Inc. During his time at Franklin, Johnson was responsible for overseeing global portfolio management, information technology, product development and mergers and acquisitions. He was involved in Franklin Resources’ $913 million acquisition of the Templeton Group, which at the time was one of the largest mergers in mutual fund history.[4] Johnson currently serves as a director on the Franklin Resources board.[5]
Conviction for Domestic Violence
In 2003 Johnson pleaded no contest to one count of felony domestic violence with the special allegation that he caused his wife great bodily harm.[6] Johnson was sentenced to 11 months in county jail and three years probation, he received credit for time served.[7]
Election to Franklin Resources Board of Directors
In 2013, Johnson was formally re-elected to serve on the New York Stock Exchange listed Franklin Resources Inc (NYSE: BEN) board of directors. [8]
Non-Profit Work
Johnson serves on the board of Curriki, a non-profit organization formed to empower educators to deliver and share curricula.[9] He also serves on the advisory board of a Salvation Army rehabilitation center based in South San Francisco.
