General Sir Charles Richard Huxtable, KCB, CBE, DL (born 22 July 1931) is a retired senior British Army officer who served as Commander-in-Chief, Land Forces between 1988 and 1990.
Early life
Huxtable was born 22 July 1931. He was educated at Wellington College, an independent school in Berkshire.
Military career
On 8 February 1952, having attended the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, Huxtable was commissioned into the Duke of Wellington's Regiment as a second lieutenant. He was given the service number 420858.[1] He served as a platoon commander in the latter stages of the Korean War.[2] He was promoted to lieutenant on 8 February 1954,[3] captain on 8 February 1958,[4] and major on 8 February 1965.[5] In 1967 he served as a Company Commander in Cyprus.[6]
Huxtable became Commander of Land Forces in Northern Ireland in 1980,[7] Director of Army Staff Duties in 1982 and then Commander of Training and Arms Directors at the Ministry of Defence in 1983.[2] He went on to be Quartermaster-General in 1986 and Commander in Chief, UK Land Forces in 1988 before retiring in 1990. He was Colonel Commandant of the Ulster Defence Regiment from 1991 until 1992.[8]
Later life
In retirement he has served as a member of the Prime Minister's Advisory Committee on Business Appointments.[9]
Honours and decorations
Huxtable was awarded the Korea Medal and the United Nations Service Medal for Korea for his service during the Korean War.
In the 1961 Queen's Birthday Honours, he was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE).[10]
