Charlet Duboc (born September 6, 1985) is an on-screen correspondent and documentary producer based between VICE Media's London and New York operations. Duboc specialises in cultural exposé, human interest & satirical documentary, fronting a variety of content across VICE's digital platforms, notably acclaimed webseries "Fashion Week Internationale". She has also written for The Guardian,[1] the Observer and has appeared on CNN.[2]
Early life
Duboc was born in Surrey, United Kingdom.[3] where she lived until aged 17 before reading BA American Studies with Film at Kings College London. Captivated by VICE magazine as a teenager, she told scribd.com in 2013, "I’d even travel all the way to London to get a copy of the magazine. I’d take it home, hide it from my mum and fantasise about dating the guys who wrote it."[4]
VICE career
A keen journalist, Duboc started off at VICE in London as an editorial intern. Her first break came when tasked with finding fashion-related stories. She discovered that the first ever fashion week in Islamabad, Pakistan, was scheduled to go ahead in the following weeks. After pitching the idea of using "other" fashion weeks as a hook to explore stories of identity and culture around the world, she was given the go ahead and made the presenter of the new show, which was given the deliberately facetious title 'Fashion Week Internationale'.[5] The production was done with director William Fairman, whom Duboc credits as her mentor and greatest professional inspiration, and under the guidance of Andy Capper. Each episode of the Fashion Week Internationale web series is 30 minutes long and is based in a country not commonly associated with mainstream fashion programming. Before completion of filming season II, Duboc had learned to self-produce and self-direct herself on-screen and continues to do so with much of the content she fronts. Duboc went on to diversify her video-journalism remit, addressing a variety of themes within the fields of current affairs, cultural commentary, satirical documentary as well as food & music programming.
In 2015 Duboc took a break from appearing on-screen in order to step wholly behind the camera, producing a TV show for the launch of VICE Media's first television channel VICELAND in the United States. The production is a re-make of Duboc's webseries Fashion Week Internationale, this time for a US television audience. The show goes by a new name 'State of Undress' and is fronted by a new host - American model, actress and writer Hailey Gates, with whom Duboc worked closely. Filming was completed in late 2015 and the 6 part show airs from late March 2016.
2016 will see Duboc return to VICE's screens.
