Cheriton Fitzpaine is a Red Devon village, a couple of miles off the main Crediton to Tiverton road. It has many fifteenth-century houses, including the longest thatched house in England (the old Primary School; there is now a newer building that houses the school). The Church of St Matthew (Church of England) is a Gothic-style church. There is also a Methodist Church in the village. The Almshouses date from 1594. The population of the parish in the 2011 Census was 556.[1] The village is a major part of the electoral ward called Way. The ward population at the above census was 1,603.[2] The village also has two pubs, The Half Moon and The Ring of Bells; a Drama Group; a Football Club and a Cricket Club and recently have had a new school opened.
Local amenities
Cheriton Fitzpaine primary school
The school building dates back to 1642 and is the oldest thatched longhouse in the village, its former use thought to have been as the church house. In 1875 a school board was formed and the school started, with the local attendance officer as clerk of the board.[3] The addition of the school house to the teaching space in 1983 accommodated growing numbers, as well as providing space for an outdoor swimming-pool. The school is currently campaigning for a new building. The land has been acquired and plans are being drawn up in readiness for funding. This has been a long process begun by a pupil letter-writing exercise in 1998. Students wrote to Downing Street and received a reply, which can be read on the school's website.[4] Work began on the new school in September 2009 and finished in October 2010. It was officially opened in November 2010.
Jacks Acre
The local community is fortunate to have access to a large field for which many have seen the benefit. One such use is the school's sports days and games lessons. The parish council maintains the field and seeks to make continual improvements, the most recent addition being that of a basketball hoop.[5]
Under-elevens playground
This playground, containing swings and play tractor, is situated just off the main street and is used by all locals. It is maintained by the parish council, which seeks local input into the equipment contained and ideas for possible improvements.
Village pubs
The Ring of Bells and the Half Moon Inn have been serving the village for more than 150 years, and are mentioned in the directories of Kelly 1893 and Whites of 1850.[3]
Thorne's Farm Shop
Thorne's Farm Shop is a local farm shop placed on the outskirts. It serves homegrown fruit & vegetables, bakery, meat, dairy among other local produce and there is also a cafe and Pick Your Own is available in the summer months.
Historic estates
- Upcott, home of the lawyer Nicholas Radford (d.1455), notoriously murdered there by henchmen of the Earl of Devon.
World Record holders
The Cricket Club held the world record for the world's longest cricket marathon. Previously 26 hours and 13 minutes and held by a French team, the record was broken by over an hour on 24 and 25 June 2006. Cornwall Cricket Club, Auckland, New Zealand, now holds the record at 100 hours.
