Chilakaluripet is a city in Guntur district of the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. It is a municipality and the mandal headquarters of Chilakaluripet mandal in Narasaraopet revenue division.[2]

History

Chilakaluripet was known as "chilakala thota, Rajagari Kota and Purushothama patnam" in the 18th and 19th centuries. A village on the outskirts of Chilakaluripet has a great history. The British used to call this town as "Chick pet". Due to the number of orchards in and around the town, parrots used to flock here and live on the trees. Hence, this place was called "Chilakaluru" during the time of Chilakaluripet zameendars.

Demographics

As of 2011 Census of India, the town had a population of 101,550. The total population constitute, 50,201 males and 51,349 females —a sex ratio of 1023 females per 1000 males, higher than the national average of 940 per 1000.[3][4] 9,525 children are in the age group of 0–6 years, of which 4,916 are boys and 4,609 are girls—a ratio of 938 per 1000. The average literacy rate stands at 72.08% with 52,106 literates, lower than the national average of 73.00%.[1][5]

Governance

Civic administration

Chilakaluripet Municipality was constituted in 1964. It oversees the civic needs of the city like, water supply, sewage, garbage collection etc. It is a I–Grade municipality which has an extent of 18.13 km2 (7.00 sq mi) with 34 wards.[6]

Transport

The town has no rail network and mostly depends on road connectivity. APSRTC operates buses from Chilakaluripet bus station.[7][8] The Asian Highway 45 passes through the town, which connects Kolkata and Chennai.[9] State Highway 45 which connects Piduguralla and Chirala also passes through the town, intersecting the Asian Highway 45.[10]
