He is son of Member of Parliament and Union Minister Ram Vilas Paswan.[1] He was elected as member of the 16th Lok Sabha in the 2014 Indian general election from Jamui constituency in Bihar, while his father who is president of the Lok Janshakti Party won from Hajipur constituency.[2]

He was earlier a Bollywood actor [3] He made his way to the Bollywood by signing the movie of Tanveer Khan's Miley Naa Miley Hum in 2011.[4] He made his Bollywood debut in a romantic drama opposite not one but three leading ladies Kangana Ranaut, Neeru Bajwa and Sagarika Ghatge. However, the film failed at the box office, thereby ending his Bollywood career.[1]

Subsequently he turned to politics and contested the 2014 elections as LJP candidate. He won the seat by defeating the nearest rival Sudhansu Shekhar Bhaskar of Rashtriya Janata Dal by over 85,000 votes.[2]
