Chop Point School

Chop Point School is a school located in the city of Woolwich, Maine on Merrymeeting Bay [1]

History

The school site was originally owned by Native Americans until it was purchased by an all-girls summer camp in the mid-1800's. In the 1950's, Franklin Hayward and Peter Willard purchased the camp with the goal of starting a Christian summer camp. At the time of the purchase, the Kennebec River was heavily polluted from upriver waste.[2]

In the late 1980's, Hayward and Willard decided to open a Christian school along with their camp, which they named Chop Point School.

Geography

The school is located on Chops Point, a peninsula that juts into the Kennebec River. The campus looks out into Merry meeting Bay and The Chops. The campus has a hills, multiple buildings, camp cabins and a barn. The soccer field is called Bridge Field. Other facilities include tennis courts, a playground, a large gymnasium and a system of trails along the bay.

Students

The school's total enrollment is 88, with students ranging from kindergarten to the 12th grade. Twenty Five students attend the high school. The teacher-student ratio is one to six.[3]

Athletics

Chop Point School offers variety of sports. The soccer team is class D in the Maine Principals Association. The 2015 soccer team went 2 and 8, with wins against High-view Christian Academy and Temple Academy. The school hosts a running club. The basketball team competes in the MCSSL.[4]
