Chris Phillips (born February 26, 1958) is an American voice actor, songwriter, singer and producer. He is best known for his roles in Rockstar games such as Marty Chonks and El Burro in Grand Theft Auto III, his role in Max Payne and voicing Felix the Cat in Felix the Cat: The Movie.
Early life
He studied at Stella Adler Studio of Acting and attended Emerson College in Boston.
Career
Phillips might also be best known as the voice of Face, the mascot on the former Nick Jr. (block) that ran on Nickelodeon from 1988 to 2009 before its branding was used for the Nick Jr. channel after its re-brand, when Nickelodeon's preschool channel changed its name from Noggin to Nick Jr, and the Nick Jr. block changed its name from Nick Jr. to Nick Play Date. Face ran from 1994 until 2004, with Phillips returning to voice him for a cameo appearance on a new years countdown on TeenNick's The '90s Are All That block in 2011. Phillips was also the original announcer voice for Cartoon Network during its checkerboard era from 1992 to 1997, and some parts of its Powerhouse era until 2000. He returned to Cartoon Network for May to early June 2007 as the announcer for its Invaded block. Phillips voiced many characters on the animated series Doug, which aired on both ABC and Nickelodeon (In Disney's version, he also became the voice of Roger Klotz as Billy West left.). Other cartoons include PB&J Otter for Disney, Beavis and Butt-Head for MTV, Generation Jets for CBS, Bubble Guppies for Nickelodeon and Team Umizoomi also on Nickelodeon. He does regular voice work for the award winning PBS show Between the Lions. He has been in numerous “TV Funhouse” episodes for Saturday Night Live.
Animated film credits include Felix the Cat: The Movie as Felix, the Professor, and Grumper, Roger Klotz and various voices in Doug's 1st Movie and various voices in Osmosis Jones, directed by Bobby and Peter Farrelly.
Phillips has voiced a number of computer games as well including Grand Theft Auto III, Max Payne 1 & 2, Mafia: The City of Lost Heaven, Red Dead Revolver, Alone in the Dark and Neverwinter Nights 2.
His voice has appeared on TV and radio commercials for Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon, Comcast, Honey Nut Cheerios, eBay, Rolaids, Arby’s, Cocoa Puffs, Miller Lite, Lucky Charms, New York Lottery, Cingular, FedEx and Pepto-Bismol, to name a few.
He appeared in the Denis Leary special No Cure for Cancer for Showtime and Lock 'n Load for HBO. He directed and appeared in the off Broadway version of No Cure for Cancer. He was also in Leary's holiday special Merry F %$in' Christmas for Comedy Central, (Phillips wrote and produced the title song) he is also co-author of the book of the same name. He is in the Leary special Douchebags and Donuts for Comedy Central. Phillips also writes all of Leary's songs with him as well as produces his CDs. He has received a platinum album for the single "Asshole" and a gold record for No Cure for Cancer.
Phillips has written and produced music for American Motors cars and Ethan Allen Furniture commercials. He co-wrote and performed the theme for Shorties Watching Shorties for Comedy Central and is in the house band for The Comedy Central specials Comics Come Home. Phillips and his band The Enablers are the backup band for Denis Leary. They released their own CD entitled Everest. As a young boy, Phillips and his sister Pam used to make comedy tapes with a recorder he received from his grandfather. It was then that he got the performing bug. He currently voices the Cake Monster and additional voices on Wallykazam!, and additional voices on Bubble Guppies, both on Nickelodeon.
