Christoffer 'Dr Chris' van Tulleken (born 18 August 1978)[1] is a British infectious diseases doctor and TV presenter.[2][3] He is best known for presenting the BAFTA winning[4] CBBC series Operation Ouch! alongside his identical twin brother Alexander 'Dr Xand' van Tulleken.[5][6]

Twins

Doctor Chris is the younger of the two by 7 minutes. Chris is 5 kilograms lighter and 1/2 and inch shorter than his twin brother Doctor Xand Van Tulleken.[7]

Education

Van Tulleken was educated at King's College School,[8] an independent school for boys in Wimbledon, in South West London, followed by St Peter's College at the University of Oxford,[8] where he obtained his medical degree in 2002.[9] He is currently an MRC funded PhD student at UCL in the lab of Greg Towers.[10]

Life and career

Van Tulleken presented Channel 4's “Medicine Men go Wild” with his brother Xand,[11] and BBC Two's Trust Me, I'm A Doctor alongside Michael Mosley.[12] He was the expedition doctor for BBC Two's “Operation Iceberg”,[13] and has appeared in “Top Dogs: Adventures in War, Sea and Ice” (BBC 2),[14] “Holiday Hit Squad” (BBC One),[15] “Museum of Life” (BBC Two),[16] “The Secret Life of Twins” (BBC One),[17] as well as Celebrity Mastermind and The Wright Stuff.[18] Van Tulleken was also doctor to a team led by Bruce Parry which recreated the 1911 race to the South Pole in the BBC documentary “Blizzard: Race to the Pole”.[19] He has also presented "What's The Right Diet For You? A Horizon Special".[20][21]

Van Tulleken was named as an emerging British talent in 'The Brit List 2013' by ShortList magazine.[22]

In 2015, he presented another Horizon episode, titled "Is Binge Drinking Really That Bad?", in which Chris and his identical twin brother Xand tested the effects of drinking moderate amounts of alcohol daily (Chris) and bingeing weekly (Xand).[23]

He and his brother Xand appeared on Series 5 of Hacker Time.[24]

Humanitarian Aid

Christoffer is a Patron and Board Member of the medical aid and healthcare charity Doctors of the World UK,[25] which is a member of the international Médecins du Monde network. In 2015, Christoffer and his brother Alexander ran the London Marathon for Doctors of the World, raising over £3,400 . Van Tulleken is a patron of the medical aid organisation Medical Emergency Relief International (Merlin),[26][27] which merged with Save the Children in 2013 , and reported for BBC Two in the aftermath of Cyclone Nargis, Burma, in 2008.[28]
