Chuck Currie
Chuck Currie (born 1969) is a United Church of Christ (UCC) minister in Portland, Oregon. "He's an outspoken activist for healthcare, immigration reform and gun violence prevention. He worked on the Affordable Care Act and married several same-sex couples when same-sex marriage was approved last spring," reported The Oregonian in a August 19, 2014 profile. [1] Pacific University announced in late 2013 that Currie had been appointed as the University's director of the Center for Peace & Spirituality, University Chaplain and Assistant Professor of Religious Studies effective Fall 2014.[2]
Currie earned a Master of Divinity degree from Eden Theological Seminary in St. Louis, MO. in 2006.[3] In 2015, he received a Doctor of Ministry degree from Chicago Theological Seminary.[4]
Before joining Pacific University, Currie was appointed as the minister of both Sunnyside Church and University Park Church (2012), two Reconciling Congregations in the United Methodist Church.[5] He has also served as the Acting Minister of First Congregational United Church of Christ in Salem, Oregon (2011)[6] and as a long-term interim minister at Parkrose Community United Church of Christ (2006-2009) in NE Portland.[7]
Currie spent 17 years working in Portland homeless shelters and served on the board of the National Coalition for the Homeless before attending seminary and entering the ministry. [8]
He also writes a personal blog on religion and social issues for The Huffington Post.[9]
Currie is married to Liz Smith Currie, a senior policy advisor to the Multnomah County Chair.[10]
