Dr. Chukka Ramaiah (born 20 November 1925) popularly known as IIT Ramaiah is an Indian educationist and MLC of Telangana. He is an acclaimed expert in IIT coaching in mathematics.[1][2] He is famously known for IIT Study Circle, an IIT JEE coaching centre at Nallakunta, Hyderabad. He is a leading Telangana activist.[3]

Early life

Ramaiah was born in Gudur village of Warangal district in Telangana to Narasamma and Anantharamaiah in Brahmin Family. His father died when he was only 14.

He studied at his village school until the third grade, with his mother's insistence to pursue his education,. He obtained his bachelor's degree at Osmania University and went on to do his M.Sc.

Career

Chukka Ramaiah fought the feudal system in Hyderabad State that was prevalent in rural hinterland of Telangana region. He actively participated in helping the poor, and was banished by his Brahmin community for helping the dalits and the downtrodden. He joined the Mahatma Gandhi's untouchability movement and tried to reform backward sections in his village. He actively participated in the rebellion against the Nizam, Razakar Movement and was jailed for several years.

Teaching career

After his release from the jail, he joined as a teacher in a school at Jangaon. He taught Mathematics at various schools across the Telangana region before retiring as the principal of the AP Residential School, Nagarjuna Sagar in 1983.

The institute

Chukka Ramaiah, after retiring in 1983, could not get his pension and other benefits approved by the government. This made him to look for means for livelihood. He went to Basar's Saraswati temple and stayed there for a week to contemplate his future. There he decided to start teaching again privately. He owes much of his success in his post-retirement life to Basar saraswati temple. He moved to Hyderabad and settled in Nallakunta. Some students who were appearing for the IIT JEE entrance exam asked his help in mathematics. That batch was very successful in clearing the test. He became very popular and now an entrance exam is conducted for admission into the institute, Ramaiah Institute, which is called as Entrance exam for the entrance exam and over 20,000 students take the exam and the intake is 175 for every batch. Over 2,000 students got into IITs since its launching in 1985.

Political career

Chukka Ramaiah won as MLC in 2007.

Activisim

He was instrumental in the fight to set up an IIIT in Telangana at Basar. But the government set it up near Hyderabad, which was opposed by him.[1]

He is a strong votary for the statehood of Telangana and often speaks of poverty and backwardness of the region.[1]

Writing career

Chukka Ramaiah authored over 16 books in Telugu mainly focusing on education like Chinna Paatam, Desadesallo Vidya[4] etc.

Personal life

Chukka Ramaiah was married to late Lakshmi Bai.
