Circa (contemporary circus)

Circa is a contemporary circus company based in Brisbane, Australia. Established in 1987 under the name of Rock n Roll Circus, the company changed its name to Circa Contemporary Circus in 2004. Under Artistic Director Yaron Lifschitz, Circa produces circus productions drawing on acrobatics, movement, dance, music and theatre that tour in Australia and internationally.

Circa's touring shows span diverse contexts from works for families in traditional arts centres to European contemporary arts festivals. Its works have been acclaimed as innovative genre‐bending pieces that stretch the practice and perceptions of circus. Since 2006 Circa has toured to 34 countries across six continents. In 2014 Circa performed over 366 performances to over 130,000 audience members locally, nationally and internationally.

Circa consists of full-time ensemble, an administrative team and a dedicated circus studio. Circa also runs a training program at its Brisbane studio, in schools and with partners throughout Queensland and beyond.

The company received the Helpmann Award for Best Visual or Physical Theatre Production for S in 2013 and CIRCA in 2012, as well as numerous other nominations. CIRCA also won the Helpmann Award for Best Regional Touring Production in 2013. In 2014, Circa received the 2013 Sidney Myer Performing Arts Group Award.[1]

Katie Noonan released the album Fierce Hearts in 2014 that was music alongside their show "Love Song Circus". It was nominated for 'Best Original Soundtrack/Cast/Show Album' at the ARIA Music Awards of 2014, but lost to Gurrumul: His Life and Music by Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu.[2]
