Claro Barracks is a military installation at Ripon in North Yorkshire, England.

History

Claro Barracks, which were named after Claro Hill - a local beauty spot, date back to World War I when Wilfred Owen wrote many of his poems there.[1] In 1974 a bomb attack by the Provisional Irish Republican Army badly damaged the barracks.[2] The barracks are currently the home of 21 Engineer Regiment but the Ministry of Defence announced in March 2013 that they had been earmarked for closure in 2017.[3] This announcement was followed, in early 2016, with a statement that the site was one of 12 that will be sold as part of the strategy for the Ministry of Defence estate, although no date for the sale was given.[4]
