Clemente López de Osornio (1720-1783) was an Spanish military, Captain of the Regiment of Blandengues of Buenos Aires during the Viceroyalty of Peru.[1]

Biography

Born November 25, 1720 in Buenos Aires, he was the son of Francisco López Osornio and María Gamiz de las Cuevas Álvarez Lasarte (criollos natives of the city). In 1746, López Osorno married in Buenos Aires to Martina Arroyo Jiménez de Paz and she gave him four children: Catalina, Andres Ramón, María Magdalena, and Angel. After widowhood López Osorno returns to marry in 1766 with María Manuela Rubio Díaz Gamiz, having six children: Juana Bautista, María Rafaela, Petrona Josefa, Agustina, José Silverio and María Luisa.[2]

Militar de Frontera

In 1736 Clemente López de Osornio enlisted in the provincial militia of cavalry and served in the defense in the fort of Arrecifes against Indians. Three years later, he participated in the campaign of Captain Juan de San Martin to the area that is now Laguna de los Padres, near Mar del Plata. In 1752 Osornio was appointed Commissioner in pago of Magdalena. In 1765 he was appointed Commanding general of militia in Province of Buenos Aires, he led an expedition to the Salinas Grandes, west of Bahia Blanca, along the way, he made a survey of the tribes that roamed the area, organized five companies of Blandengues intended to garrison the southern border with the Indians. In 1766 Clemente López Osornio was appointed Alcalde de la hermandad in the present territory of Almirante Brown.[3]

In 1779 López Osornio obtained retired, and was dedicated exclusively to manage his ranch named Rincón de López. He became a wealthy landowner. In 1782 he was appointed as representative of the landowners in the Cabildo porteño.

In 1783, the ranch Rincon Lopez was attacked by rebel Indians, Osornio and his son Andres, had to seek refuge behind a ditch and palisade, after resisting for three days the Indians approached enough to throw boleadoras with fire toward the ranch, he with his son and some pawns they decided to confront against the Indians. On December 13, 1783 Clemente López de Osornio and his son they were killed by the Indians, in his estancia Rincón de López, located in the province of Buenos Aires.[4]

Clemente López de Osornio was the maternal grandfather of Juan Manuel de Rosas.[5]
