Clouds Taste Metallic is the seventh album by the band The Flaming Lips, released on September 19, 1995. It is the last Flaming Lips album featuring guitarist Ronald Jones, and the last album presenting the group as a guitar-driven, alternative rock band.
After Ronald Jones left in 1996, songs from this album were rarely played live over the years, but since summer 2014, they've been played during lots of their live shows alongside their general post Soft Bulletin material for the first time in many years. On February 24, 2015, the entire album was performed live for the first time ever, including songs that were never played live when Ronald was in the band, and on December 18, 2015, a compilation of material surrounding the album's release called Heady Nuggs: 20 Years After Clouds Taste Metallic 1994-1997 was also released.
Alternate versions
"They Punctured My Yolk" was sampled on Beastie Boys' To the 5 Boroughs album in the song "We Got The." The album's recording is featured heavily in the documentary The Fearless Freaks.
An alternate mix of "Bad Days" had previously been released on the EP Due to High Expectations... The Flaming Lips Are Providing Needles for Your Balloons and the Batman Forever soundtrack.
As part of Record Store Day 2016, an alternate mix of the Clouds Taste Metallic album called "Lightning Strikes The Postman" (featuring ex-Flaming Lips guitarist, Ronald Jones) was released. The CD only release also contains an original comic written and illustrated by Wayne Coyne.
