Club Santos Laguna S.A. de C.V. (Spanish pronunciation: [ˈsantos laˈɣuna]) commonly known as Santos Laguna or Santos, is a Mexican professional football club and current Liga MX champions. They represent the urban area of La Comarca Lagunera, which is made up of Torreón Municipality, Gómez Palacio Municipality, and Lerdo Municipality. Santos Laguna currently plays in the Liga MX. The club was founded in 1983, and reached Mexico's top division after buying the franchise belonging to the Ángeles de Puebla. The club's debut in Mexico's top division was in the 1988–89 tournament. They have won the league championship five times: first in the Invierno 1996 tournament, second in the Verano 2001 tournament, third in the Clausura 2008 tournament, fourth in the Clausura 2012 tournament, and the most recent in the Clausura 2015 tournament. They have also reached the finals in the 1993–94 season, the Verano 2000 tournament, the Bicentenario 2010 tournament, the Apertura 2010 tournament, and the Apertura 2011 tournament. They also won the Apertura 2014 Copa MX.

It is the third football club that was formed in the Laguna Region, after the demise of clubs Laguna Football Club and Football Club Torreon, teams were not successful and had to sell their franchises to form the Black Lions of the University Deportivo Guadalajara and Neza respectively. In 2003 the club celebrated its 20th year anniversary held in large throughout the Laguna Region.

It is currently the fifth most popular team in Mexico according to the latest poll by Consulta Mitofsky on February 17, 2013.[2] It is ranked 58th in the current world rankings Classification According to the IFFHS clubes.[3] It is considered the 4th best club XXI Century CONCACAF zone and the sixth CONCACAF team of the 1st Decade of the XXI Century.

History

Foundation and early years

The Club Santos Laguna was officially founded in 1983 by the Mexican Social Security Institute of Durango State under the name of Santos IMSS. Since the late 1970s, the IMSS organized a national football tournament with teams representing various parts of the country. At these competitions, attended for five consecutive years by teams from the nearby city Gomez Palacio won several championships and always left a good impression. This group of players who mostly played in the team " Asturias" of the Gomez Palatine League were asked by IMSS to represent their city in the tournaments.

Jose Diaz Couder, as head of social services in the IMSS Gomez Palacio, was invited to participate in those tournaments despite not having his own team. He appealed to the players he knew to form a team, based on the Asturias. Regularly results were good, which favored the insistence of Diaz Couder to senior management of the Social Security Institute to send a second division franchise team to La Laguna area.

In 1982, the Tuberos de Veracruz, which were part of the Second Division "B " Mexican soccer disappeared, which IMSS purchased and acquired a new franchise that added to their existing ones, among which were those of Atlante and the Oaxtepec. The franchise rights were offered last minute to Gomez Palacio, but with time running out and little infrastructure declined to accept it and the franchise rights went to Santa Cruz, Tlaxcala, where Social Security had opened their resort of La Trinidad. There, with a good stadium, arose the first Santos Laguna, a name taken by the town, Santa Cruz, its people, therefore, were Santos . Due to poor results, the team spent less than a year in Tlaxcala and virtually at the end of 1983 season was dissolved; the team would then migrate to the Shire.

Jose Diaz Couder, Sports Coordinator of the IMSS in Gómez Palacio, received the news of Professor Lorenzo García González, Director of Soccer Schools of Social Security and of Mr. Juan Antonio Carranza, Deputy Director of Corporate Services of the IMSS, Diaz Couder spread the news and the Saints were bound to the Laguna Region.

A lack of facilities in Gomez Palacio, began efforts to get Moctezuma Stadium (Estadio Corona) in Torreon, owned by John Abusaid. Thanks to an agreement the Saints made their first home in the now demolished first Estadio Corona.

The team was now taking shape and Juan Manuel Ramírez Meza " Jainel " was the one who started with workouts, however they do not have " license " to lead in professional football, had to resort to Don Grimaldo Gonzalez, but by not having his Mexican naturalization process completed could not could manage in the lower divisions so Fernando Zamora came to be the coach of the team, joining the team just days before the start of torneo.

In 1994, following the departure of one of there key players Ramón Ramírez to Guadalajara, left the club without one of their best players. In this season Santos achieved qualification for the playoffs for the second time. In the following season los Guerreros participated in the 1995 CONCACAF Champions Cup where they were eliminated in the first round against Deportivo FAS of El Salvador, in this season the Argentine Mauro Camoranesi came in to reinforce the team. Camoranesi played a total of 13 games with Santos and only scored one goal before leaving back to Uruguay. Mauro Camoronesi would later go on to play for Juventus where he would become a naturalized citizen in Italy and would later form part of the Italian national team in the 2006 World Cup becoming champions, Mauro became the only ex-santista to have achieved this distinction.[5] Another key players that season and the following are Gabriel Caballero, Francisco Gabriel de Anda and Miguel España.

The Invierno 1996 tournament is the first Mexican soccer short tournament, also the best tournament played for Santos Laguna in this tournament, reinforcements arrived from the likes of Jared Borgetti and Chilean Cristian Montecinos. He reached the third league during the regular season when they lost only 3 games in the league. In Winter 1997 tournament Santos got to go to their second CONCACAF tournament disputing a preliminary match against Los Angeles Galaxy lost 4–1. The Saints made it through to the next stage where the Atlante vs Corona but the Warriors won 2-1 at the Estadio Andrés Quintana Roo pounced Atlante and at the last minute the criminal via Atlante defeated the Warriors 3-1 that left out of the tournament. The Apertura 2009 was an important tournament for the institution as it would open the grand Nuevo Estadio Corona thanks to a good tournament smoothly agreed to the play-offs but Monarcas Morelia and Monarchs defeat in the group stage 4–2 on aggregate, which led to the dismissal of Good and hiring Ruben Omar Romano.

2010 years

In 2010 the Warriors Bicentenario lived a similar story to the previous tournament, only this time the tournament culminated in a tailspin, yet in the league faced Pumas, Santos won 2–0 in Torreon, and CU lost although the score 1–0 2–1 favored harrier box. In the semi-finals again faced Monarcas Morelia and this time the story would be different, in Morelia Santos pulled out a thrilling 3–3, which forced Monarchs beat the Warriors in Torreon, Morelia beat Santos 7–1 with an outstanding Oribe Peralta performance scoring a treble, Santos agreed to the Grand Final against Toluca in the first leg is tied for Corona 2–2 at the Estadio Nemesio Díez after playing 120 minutes the game ended with a score 0–0 having to force to define the match penalties. Santos came close to the title but a series of errors at the end denied the championship falling 4–3 to Toluca in criminal proceedings. In the 2010 Apertura Christian Benitez returned after passing by English side Birmingham City. With high level, Benitez contributed greatly, making the warriors had a surprising start, linking four wins and placed on the top of the table. In Clausura 2015, Santos rebounded from a string of six matches without a victory to qualify to the finals. From this point Santos would take the Liguilla by storm, pulling an unlikely win in the second leg with an aggregate score of 2-1 over top ranked Tigres UANL to get to the semifinals. They faced another big favorite, Chivas del Guadalajara, whom they defeated with an aggregate score of 3-0 and made their way to the finals, where they would face Gallos Blancos del Querétaro on their debut in a Liga MX final. Santos beat Querétaro soundly in the first leg of the finals at Territorio Santos Modelo with a record-breaking score of 5-0, with Javier "Chuletita" Orozco standing out with a poker (4 goals in the same match). On the second leg at the Corregidora stadium, Gallos went offensive and netted a victory of 3-0 for an aggregate score of 5-3, earning Santos their fifth championship.

The Club Santos Laguna has always dressed in bright green, with white accessories and sometimes black. The origin of the uniform comes after the acquisition of the franchise Angeles de Puebla. The colors green and white uniform thanks to originally adopt Mexican Social Security Institute in the 1983–84 season.

The first club Santos Laguna uniform was white with green sleeves and a green line crossing vertically through the middle of the shirt, green shorts and green socks as Laguna Football Club and away uniform was completely white as that the Football Club Torreon, uniforms worn both as a tribute to both teams missing from the lagoon region to give satisfaction to the fans of these clubs. It was not until 1986 that they began to wear the uniform that we all now know, holder using a shirt with green and white horizontal stripes, green shorts, white socks and wore a uniform visitor all white with bright green. In 2011, Santos ended his contract with Athletic to sign another with Puma manufacturing as sports team sponsorship for two years, although it had previously announced an agreement with Nike, never reached an agreement and the team also had to get rid of his eight sponsors. In 2012 the uniform was white shirt with his traditional green stripes, green shorts and socks, and away shirt green blue lime green details and a strip in half, green pants and white socks.

Corona Stadium

The Corona Stadium (the name comes from the beer brand) was one of the smallest football stadiums in Mexico having only capacity for 20,100 seats. It was located in the city of Torreón, Coahuila. This sport facility was used mostly for football games and was the home of the club. From its opening in 1970 to 1986, the stadium was known as "Moctezuma Stadium".

The stadium was inaugurated on July 2, 1970 in a friendly match between the now-defunct CF Torreón and Guadalajara, the score was three goals to one in favor of the visitors. Francisco Jara was the first goal scorer in this stadium. The last official goal recorded at this stadium was scored by Vicente Matías Vuoso at the 66th minute on November 1, 2009.

The stadium was demolished on November 2, 2009.

New Corona Stadium

Santos Laguna currently play at new Estadio Corona, which holds 30,050 people. The new stadium cost US$100,000,000. Construction started on February 22, 2008. On November 11, 2009 the new stadium opened its doors hosting a friendly match between Santos Laguna and Santos FC from the Brazilian Série A. The sold out crowd included the Mexican President, Felipe Calderón, and Brazilian legend, Pelé. Santos Laguna won 2–1.

One of the characteristic symbols of Club Santos Laguna is his shield. After its founding in 1983, the first club crest was created, it was white with green stripes and green letters the name of Club Santos IMSS, very similar to the Santos FC, same he held until 1986. In 1991, when Grupo Modelo became the new owner of the team is changed, both the design of the uniform, as the shield, with the new shield similar as we know it today, which currently consists of a white ball with five pentagons truncated on the ball green and placed a crown. For this the shield suffered little change.

In 1986 the idea of then club president Salvador Necochea Sagi second design was created, which consisted of a white ball with five pentagons truncated green, green with a crown above the name of the club and placed in the center. But after the club decided to change the green to golden crown.

During the presidency of Francisco José Dávila Rodríguez, in the year 1996 was added, the first star after obtaining the first title in the club's history. Anthem

In 1991 when the club was in danger of relegation to the second division Betis was born the first song "Es hora de ganar" composed by Ricardo Serna and recorded and performed by amateurs harriers. From this time, has produced many themes that allude to the strength of a team that has made Mexican soccer star based on the weaknesses and strengths pain.

Then came other hymns and songs as champion Guerrero, Late stronger, Your destiny is to succeed, We own the ball, Anthem TSM, Duro Santos Duro (a cover of We Will Rock You) and various artists all have sung. Hiromi sang commemorating the 20th anniversary and its 25th anniversary, Yahir of La Academia. In 2012 at the request of the president of the institution Alejandro Irarragorri, recorded the official anthem for the fans and players.

Rivalries

In its early years, Santos Laguna maintained a rivalry with the Cobras club in Ciudad Juarez. The rivalry ended with the disappearance of the Club Cobras in the mid-nineties. In 2008 there was an attempt to revive the confrontation between these two cities with the promotion of the Indios de Ciudad Juárez.

Santos currently holds a rivalry with Monterrey, with whom they played a couple of finals of the First Division of Mexico, as well as two finals of the Concacaf Champions League. This antagonism has been framed by continuous violent episodes between both clubs, and generally is considered a high-risk game in the two cities. The rivalry between Santos and Monterrey is considered by many fans as a kind of classic of the North.
