The College Basketball Experience is a 41,500-square-foot (3,860 m2) fan interactive facility located downtown in Kansas City, Missouri, which includes the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame.[1] It cost $24 million to build, was opened in October 2007, and is owned and operated by the National Association of Basketball Coaches Foundation.[2]
The Hall of Honor
The Hall of Honor is a quiet, reverential area separate and distinct from other program areas. Within the Hall are the Honor Theater, Mentor’s Circle and Gallery of Honor which offer a counterpoint to the rest of the experience and enable visitors to pay homage the art of coaching and to Hall of Honor inductees: the greatest college coaches, players, teams and contributors of all time. Interactive media, iconic elements, and graphics integrate to provide a rich, engaging experience.
College Basketball Experience Classic
The location hosts the annual College Basketball Experience Classic tournament (formerly the Guardians Classic) and the reception for the Hall of Fame induction annually in November.[3][4]
2015 loan relief issue
In 2015, the operators of the College Basketball Experience asked that Kansas City forgive $600,000 of a $1.1 million loan they received to complete construction in 2007. Following construction, Kansas City asked these operators to provide fun events for high school students, and that drew hundreds of teenagers to summer dance parties. On July 4, 2015, a student was shot at one of these events causing the operators to close down the facility causing a substantial loss money.[5]
