Cornelia Dahlgren is a Swedish singer, songwriter and producer known by the stage name Cornelia. She runs her own independent label called Camp Mozart. Cornelia participated in the first season of Swedish Idol 2004, however dropped out of the show in the final stages as she did not consider the manufactured approach to the music true to what she was about.
Career
Cornelia’s formative years in Sweden were spent making songs to the backdrop of Öland’s magnificent and vast landscapes. It was only after a time of singing in choirs, playing in bands, stage performances and a brief spell as a songwriter for other artists that Cornelia was pushed to explore the possibilities of DIY music. And so Camp Mozart became the label home for her own musings. She debuted with the EP Capsule, a colourful, elemental tour de force. Close friend Jamie Woon managed to persuade Cornelia to re-locate to London from her homeland and by releasing two outstanding EPs in 2011 called By The Fire/Now and Hereafter and Aquarius Dreams she has shown great musical curiosity and inventiveness. Another single Stormy Weather was released in liaison with Exceptional Records in 2012. Since then her music has taken yet another turn, as her songs build like audiographic landscapes against a vast, boundless sky. Cornelia’s live performances not only gives you an insight in her complex, layered productions but portraits her passion for visual storytelling in a quest to ‘encourage links between all human senses’.
Cornelia has already caught the ear of numerous contemporaries, from José González declaring she has a ‘charming voice’ and music mogul Guy Sigsworth exclaiming her simply ‘wonderful’.
Year 2012 was also the year of exciting co-laborations with two widely acclaimed artists, Portico Quartet and Scratcha DVA. The song Steepless was written by Cornelia and Portico Quartet in close dialogue. The detailed simplicity of this song brings back memories of lives passed and ultimately dares to ask the big question about life and death from a slightly new angle. Steepless was released on Portico Quartet’s third and self-titled album end of January 2012. Pretty Ugly, written and produced by Scratcha DVA and Cornelia, became the title track for Scratcha DVA’s album on Hyperdub the same year. It had been described by Mary Anne Hobbs as ‘a beautiful track with a dazzling sound’.
2013 looks just as promising, expecting further co-lab releases with Bonobo (musician), Henry Saiz and Portico Quartet.
Career
Apart from being an independent songwriter, artist and producer Cornelia is also an established voice over artist for cartoons/anime.
