Cucumber blessing

Cucumbers being blessed at a Shingon Buddhist temple in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, USA.

Cucumber blessing (Japanese: きゅうり加持 or きゅうり封じ) is an Adhiṣṭhāna practised at the Shingon Buddhist temples in summer. In a Cucumber blessing meeting, the priest and believers together pray that they can pass the season of hot summer in good health, like the fresh cucumbers. [1]

Kūkai, the founder of Shingon Buddhism, is said to have initiated this practice of blessing.
