Dîner en Blanc

Dîner en Blanc
Paris, Place des Vosges (2012)

Le Dîner en Blanc is a worldwide event, spanning five continents, in which people flash-gather in a public space and set up a temporary, chic dining area.[1] The principles of the event are simply that guests dress formally in white; and that they enjoy quality food, wine and good company.[2] Only a select number of participants who have previously signed up are made privy to the location the day of the dinner, and generally converge in an iconic city location.

History

The Dîner en Blanc concept began in Paris in 1988 when Frenchman François Pasquier invited a group of friends to an elegant outdoor dinner at Bois de Boulogne, asking them to dress in white so they could find each other.[3] The event's presence has grown to over 50 cities, with almost 15,000 gathering for the flagship event in Paris.

Pasquier's son, Aymeric, introduced the concept to Montreal, Canada in 2009.[4] The event made its New York debut in 2011.[5]

In 2012, Singapore was the first Asian city to host a Dîner en Blanc,[6] and Brisbane the first Australian city.[7][8][9] Canberra held Dîner en Blancs in 2013 and 2014,[10][11] Melbourne debuted the phenomenon in 2015.[12] In March 2016, Diner En Blanc made its debut in Perth.
