DEX for Android is a software client for the Romanian explanatory dictionary (Dicţionarul explicativ al limbii române) based on the database found at DEX online.[1] The client runs on the Android platform. It was developed by Adrian Vintu together with Dana Puscau.
DEX for Android has two operating modes, online and offline, which determine where the program gets definitions. Online mode is the default, for users with continuous Internet access, where the program accesses the Internet to download definitions so users get the latest information. Offline mode is for users with variable Internet access, where the program accesses a ~500 MB database stored on a Secure Digital (SD) card.
Word definitions can be stored to a file for a later review, and can be copied and pasted into emails or SMSes.
The program is useful to students, to Romanians who want to speak and understand better the common phrases, and to non-speakers who want to learn the language.
