Draper Fisher Jurvetson (DFJ) is an American venture capital firm focused on early- and growth-stage investments in enterprise, consumer and disruptive technologies.

With the addition of Box’s IPO in 2015,[1] DFJ has invested in a total of 23 companies that have exited with a valuation of more than $1 billion [2] including: Baidu, Skype, SolarCity, Tesla Motors, Tumblr, Twitter and Yammer.[3] In 2015, DFJ was identified as one of the top investors of billion dollar startups [4] with investments in Avant,[5][6] Datastax,[6][7] Redfin [6] [8] and SimpliVity.[6][9]

History

DFJ was founded in 1985.[4] The founders are Timothy C. Draper, John H.N. Fisher, and Steve Jurvetson.

The firm has also invested in Anaplan,[10] Chef,[11] Coinbase,[12] Foursquare,[13] Mapbox,[14] Planet Labs,[15] Shift,[16] SpaceX,[17] SugarCRM,[18] Tango,[19] Theranos,[20] Twin Prime,[21] and Yodle.[22]

As of October 2015, DFJ is one of the six largest and most active investors in the space sector, which has had over US$10 billion of private capital invested in it since 2005.[23]

Organization

Partners of the Venture team include: William Bryant,[24] Steve Jurvetson, Emily Melton,[25] Bubba Murarka,[26] Andreas Stavropoulos,[27] and Josh B. Stein.[28] Partners of the Growth team include: Mark Bailey,[29] John H. N. Fisher, Sam Fort,[30] Randy Glein,[31] and Barry Schuler. Heidi Roizen is the firm’s Operating Partner.[32]

The firm is headquartered in Menlo Park, CA, and is currently investing DFJ Venture XII, a $350M fund, which closed in 2016[33][34] and DFJ Growth’s second fund of $470M,[35] which closed in 2014. DFJ’s core funds have raised more than $5 billion,[36] deployed in more than 300 companies.[27]
