It sold over one million copies and was awarded a gold disc by the R.I.A.A. in July 1972.[1] The song reached #3 on the adult contemporary chart, #4 on the Billboard Hot 100, and #55 on the country chart in 1972.[2] The song spent one week as #1 on the Cashbox chart on August 5, 1972, went one as #1 in Canada, and spent three weeks as #1 in Australia. The song appeared on his 1972 album, Daddy Don't You Walk So Fast.[3]

The song was produced by Wes Farrell and arranged by Mike Melvoin.[4]

The song was ranked #10 on Billboard magazine's Top Hot 100 songs of 1972.[5] The song also was ranked #7 on the Kent Music Report's 25 songs of 1972.
