Daikaiju (stylized "DaiKaiju") are a kaiju-themed surf rock revival band from Huntsville, Alabama.[1] The band first performed in December, 1999. As of 2016, the band is still actively touring.

History

Daikaiju was originally named Toxic Spleen, formed by Santanu Mitra and Aaron Rathz in Huntsville, while in college at University of Alabama in Huntsville, in 1999.[2]

In Marc Elliott (the original guitar player's) own words, "Toxic Spleen, like most bands, I think, was a result of 'hey let's jam' followed by 'well, (...) since we have some songs now let's play somewhere' followed by '(...) we have to think of a name'. Well, sometimes the name comes first followed by '(...) we booked a show, we better write some music'."

In 2007, the original bassist, Brian Murphree, and Marc Elliott both left the band (Brian focusing on his side project, Random Conflict, and Marc citing creative differences), but were both replaced. Brian stayed with the band long enough to assist with the mixing and mastering of Phase 2 before leaving.

This change in lineup was mentioned in a 2012 interview with Florida Geek Scene, when the interviewer brought up the change in band members between Daikaiju (album) and Phase 2.[3]

Performing Style

Daikaiju performs while wearing kabuki masks, and using pseudonyms. They do not speak during performances, instead communicating using hand signals.[4] The band often sets fire to their instruments during live shows.

It is a reflection of how wild their live performances are that they refer to these performances as "attacks";[3] or instead, in a 2013 interview with Time Out Beijing, referring to them as "Most exciting shower of golden radiance!!!".[5]
