Daljit Singh Shergill He is the former President of the 1st Gurdwara in the UK.

History of the Gurdwara

Daljit Singh Shergill became president of Smethwick Gurdwara in 1984. The Gurdwara Sahib was brought in 1961 which was in need of repairs and Sikh Sangat as Smethwick at the time was not an ethnic area. Daljit Shergill spent 25 years of service to his community, speaking with Daljit Shergill quote from BBC interview "We didn't just build a landmark Gurdwara Sahib but a community to for our next generation to come."

After raising 1.4m In 1998 the managing committee led by Daljit Singh Shergill and the support of the community, business men, council and Sikh Federation (UK) and almighty Waheguru Guru Nanak Gurdwara Sahib Smethwick was awarded the largest gurdwara in Europe after completion of the new building in 2000. Foundation stone was laid by Bhai Sahib Mohinder Singh of Niskham Sevak Jatha along with Panj Pyaree.

Plans were passed in 2005 for the new building hoping to show a new swimming pool, gym, nursery, arts gallery's and many more needs of the community, prince's cinema was demolished under Malkit Singh Johal 2007 the plans where later changed in 2009 by Avtar Singh committee.

Smethwick gurdwara saw the first Sikh Community centre SYCC build in Malkit Singh Tehang term of presidency and opened along with Panthic organization from all over UK.
