Danger Mouse is a British animated television series and a continuation of the 1981 series with the same name. The series is produced by FremantleMedia with animation by Irish Boulder Media. Danger Mouse premiered on CBBC on 28 September 2015.[1]
The series revolves around Danger Mouse, the "world's greatest secret agent", and his hamster sidekick Penfold, who protect the world from a variety of danger. With help from his boss Colonel K and the genius scientist Professor Squawkencluck, Danger Mouse is equipped to defeat his nemesis, Baron von Greenback.
Within three weeks of the series running, Danger Mouse achieved 2.4 million viewers and among the highest rated shows on CBBC.[2]
Production
In 2013, FremantleMedia confirmed to Broadcast that a reboot of the series was being considered,[3][4] and in June 2014 it was announced that a new series was being made for broadcast on CBBC in 2015.[5] The reboot is produced by Boulder Media for FremantleMedia Kids. It is directed by Robert Cullen,[6] with Brian Cosgrove, one of the original creators being a creative consultant.[7] Alexander Armstrong and Kevin Eldon will be voicing Danger Mouse and Penfold, Dave Lamb will take the role of the narrator, whilst Stephen Fry and Ed Gaughan will take on the roles of Colonel K and Baron Greenback respectively.[8] Armstrong's Pointless co-host Richard Osman will also be appearing in the series as Professor Strontium Jellyfishowitz.[9] It was also announced that John Oliver would voice Dr Augustus P Crumhorn III and Lena Headey would voice new character Jeopardy Mouse.[10] It will also be aired on ABC3 in Australia, and Netflix in the US.[11] According to Eldon, the animation style is 'much the same as the original'.[12] The series is animated in Toon Boom Harmony, as the animators thought that Flash was too limited.[13]
Characters
Main characters
- Danger Mouse (voiced by Alexander Armstrong): The world's greatest secret agent. Supremely confident in his abilities, Danger Mouse's vanity sometimes leads him to take actions that unncessarily create risky situations.
- Ernest Penfold (voiced by Kevin Eldon): A hamster and Danger Mouse's sidekick. He has an obsession with jam sandwiches, to the point that he'll make copious quantities of jam when nervous.
- Colonel K (voiced by Stephen Fry): A Chinchilla who serves as Danger Mouse and Penfold's boss. In the episode "The Return of Danger K", it is revealed that the Colonel was once an agent himself called Danger K.
- Baron Silas von Greenback (voiced by Ed Gaughan): Criminal mastermind and Danger Mouse's arch enemy. Though Greenback was a mainstay of the 1981 series, in the 2015 series, the word "von" has been incorporated into his name. He was also given a German accent to match.
- Professor Squawkencluck (voiced by Shauna Macdonald): Chief scientist of the secret service and presumably the niece of the original version of the character from the original series. She gets annoyed with Danger Mouse when he doesn't pay attention to her, uses her inventions without her permission, or breaks/messes with her latest creation, to the point where she seems to view him as being incompetent.
- Stiletto Mafiosa (voiced by Dave Lamb): Greenback's Italian crow sidekick.
- The Narrator (voiced by Dave Lamb): As with the original series, The Narrator frequently breaks the Fourth Wall, interacting with both the viewer and the characters and often finds himself in danger from the episode's antagonist.
Recurring characters
- Nero (voiced by Marc Silk): Greenback's pet fluffy white caterpillar, whose intelligence and cunning is often underestimated.
- Pandaminion (voiced by Ed Gaughan): A minion of Greenback's.
- The Queen (voiced by Morwenna Banks)
- Dr. Loo-cifer (voiced by Kayvan Novak): An advanced robotic toilet gone rogue.
- Dawn/The Princess (voiced by Morwenna Banks): A young spoiled poodle who becomes powerful after her tiara comes into contact with personality-amplifying mind gel
- Quark (voiced by Ed Gaughan): An alien who tries to use DM in money-spinning schemes.
- Jeopardy Mouse (voiced by Lena Headey):[10] The female American equivalent of Danger Mouse. Clad in a slick military jumpsuit, she performs her missions professionally and without fuss- but has a tendency to be overbearing and take herself too seriously.
- Snowman (voiced by Richard Ayoade):[14] An embarrassingly inept living snowman with the ability to freeze things with his left arm and fire explosive carrots.
- Count Duckula (voiced by Rasmus Hardiker) A stardom-obsessed vampire duck. He appears to be a mix of his classic counterpart from the original series and his vegetarian counterpart from his own spin-off series.
- Doctor Augustus P. Crumhorn III (voiced by John Oliver)
Other characters
- Big Head (voiced by Shauna Macdonald): Squawkencluck's defence computer turned bad.
- Birch Badboy (voiced by Richard Ayoade): A punk squirrel who tried to cause an outbreak of rudeness.
- Danger Toad: Greenback's heroic counterpart from the same dimension as Sinister Mouse.
- Evans (voiced by Paul Morgans): An extraterrestrial Welsh plant.
- Hysteria (voiced by Lindsey Russell): A super-villain snake.[15]
- Ian (voiced by Rasmus Hardiker): DM's supposedly biggest fan who tried to "collect" DM and his allies.
- Isambard Kingkong Brunel (voiced by Kayvan Novak): A scientist monkey who comes up with impractical inventions. He once created a time machine to replace all useful inventions with his own.
- Ivana the Invisible: An invisible supervillain who allied with Badboy.
- Jimmy Camel: A camel chat show host.
- Lionel: A gigantic spider accidentally awakened by Penfold.
- Megahurtz (voiced by Kayvan Novak): A monster fron the HQ's training simulator.
- Professor Strontium Jellyfishowitz (voiced by Richard Osman)
- Santa Claus (voiced by Brian Blessed): The spirit of Christmas, depicted as a polar bear. Uses his laugh for just about anything (jolly, nervousness, etc.) and is reliant on his magic hat for delivering presents.
- Safety Mice: Robots created by Greenback as part of his ploy of being reformed.
- Sinister Mouse: An evil version of DM from a parallel universe.
- Space Bees (queen voiced by Morwenna Banks): Alien insectoids responsible for destroying Evans' kind.
- Squawkencluck's Parents: Professor Squawkencluck's mother and father. the former has accidentally on purpose turned the latter into a rubbish monster.
- Tutankha-Moo: An Egyptian, cow-based villain.
- Queen of Weevils (voiced by Miranda Richardson): A Queen who escaped Merlin's clutches and now wants to take over the world.
