Daria Borisovna Charusha (née Simonenko; born August 25, 1988), best known by her stage name Dasha Charusha, is a Russian singer, songwriter, pianist and an actress based in the United States. Her notable debut singles 'Kosmos' and '16' published in March and October 2014 have attracted the significant attention of both local and foreign media to notice her unique conceptual classic sounds. She is married to Ilya Naishuller, the frontman of punk-rock band Biting Elbows and the director of the first ever action/sci-fi POV movie Hardcore Henry, a movie which was inspired by a soundtrack written by Charusha, and in which she appears.
Life and career
Charusha was born Daria Borisovna Simonenko on 25 August 1988 in Norilsk, Krasnoyarskiy kray, Russian SFSR, Soviet Union. She grew up with the passion for music and theatre tp which she dedicated most of her early years. She attended Moscow Conservatory at the age of 18 and studied to be a composer. She began composing her own songs at a young age.
Daria, having a passion for acting as well, enrolled to Moscow Art School GITIS where she graduated as a dramatic actress in June 2010. She acted in a handful of Russian movies and TV series while writing cinema scores and working on her own album. The first big success was her co-writing work with Andrey Karasev on the music for the motion picture Silent Souls which was release in October 2010, presented at Venice Film Festival and got very positive reviews.
In 2014, Charusha acted as the producer for the 'Cold Front'[1] movie where she played one of the female lead roles and also wrote the score. The movie was shot in Normandy in December of the same year. Her international breakthrough came with the premiere of Hardcore Henry in September 2015 at the Toronto Film Festival.[2]
