EXID (/iː ˈɛks aɪ ˈdiː/; Hangul: 이엑스아이디), an acronym for Exceed In Dreaming,[1] is a five-member South Korean girl group, composed of Solji, LE, Hani, Hyelin and Junghwa. They debuted on February 16, 2012 with the release of "Holla". The quintet released their first EP Hippity Hop in August 2012, but it was met with limited success. Their 2014 single "Up & Down", however, reached number one on the Gaon Singles Chart four months after its initial release.
EXID released their next mini-album Ah Yeah on April 13, 2015, with "Ah Yeah" as its lead single. The single also was met with commercial success as it peaked at the runner-up position on the Gaon Singles Chart. Their next single, "Hot Pink", was released in November 2015. It was a commercial success, being able to top musical charts.
History
2011: Pre-debut
In May 2011, producer Shinsadong Tiger and AB Entertainment (now known as Gamgak Entertainment) scouted several trainees from JYP Entertainment to form a new girl group. Trainee Yuji was the first to join AB Entertainment when JYP's girl group, which consisted of Yuji, Hani, Song Ji-eun (of Secret), and Hyolyn (of Sistar), failed to debut. Yuji contacted JYP trainees Hani, Haeryeong, and Junghwa to audition for AB, and all three were subsequently accepted into the agency. The group added a fifth member when Shinsadong discovered LE, an underground rapper and songwriter who performed under the name "Elly." Dami, who was already an AB trainee, was the sixth and last member added to the group.[2] Originally named "WT", an acronym for "Who's That", the group later changed their name to EXID, an initialism for "Exceed in Dreaming", a few months before their debut.[3] In December 2011, LE was featured in Huh Gak's single "Whenever You Play That Song", which was a hit on major Korean music charts.[4][5]
EXID was scheduled to debut in January 2012, but their debut was delayed to February when LE sustained a leg injury during rehearsals.[6] On February 3, 2012, AB announced that EXID would debut with the single "Whoz That Girl".[7] Video teasers featuring various members doing solo performances were subsequently released online.
2012: Debut, lineup changes, Hippity Hop and "Every Night"
EXID dropped their first digital single "Holla" on February 16, 2012.[8] They made their debut performance on M! Countdown, followed by Music Core and Inkigayo.[8][9] Their debut song "Whoz That Girl" peaked at number 36 on the Gaon Singles Chart, ultimately selling 840,000 digital copies.
In April 2012, AB Entertainment announced the departure of original members Yuji, Dami, and Haeryeong. AB said in a statement that Yuji and Dami left the group to focus on their studies, while Haeryeong left to pursue an acting career.[10][11] They were replaced by Solji, a former member of vocal duo 2NB, and Hyelin, who was considered to be part of EXID's original lineup before she was dropped.[12][13]
With the new members, EXID returned in August 2012 with their comeback single "I Feel Good" and their first EP Hippity Hop.[14] Hippity Hop debuted at number 13 on the Gaon Albums Chart, selling 1,500 copies. On October 2, EXID returned with a new digital single "Every Night", an alternate version of LE's self-written song "Phone Call" which was recorded in their debut EP.[15] "Every Night" debuted at number 43 on the Gaon Singles Chart, selling 105,000 digital copies.
On October 11, EXID released the song "Hey Boy" as part of the soundtrack release for MBC’s sitcom, The Thousandth Man. The song is the female version of B1A4‘s main title song, “Hey Girl“. Producer Shinsadong Tiger rearranged the song into a "reggae style" to create a different approach from B1A4′s original version.[16]
It was revealed on November 30, 2012 that EXID along with Big Star and D-Unit, would be working together on a special collaboration album in addition to a special year-end concert.[17] The concert, titled "The Bugs Show Vol. 1", was subsequently held on December 22 at the V-Hall in Hongdae, Seoul, South Korea.[18] On December 6, EXID won the rookie award at the “20th Korea Culture & Entertainment Awards”. In their acceptance speech, the group said “We are so happy and honored to receive such a meaningful award. We will continue to try our best and grow."[19][20]
2013–14: Dasoni sub-unit, "Up & Down", and rise in popularity
On February 8, 2013, EXID released the single "Up & Down" from the Incarnation of Money soundtrack, and it was announced shortly afterwards that Hani and Solji would be taking part in a sub-unit called "Dasoni".[21] The sub-unit released their debut single "Goodbye" on February 15, 2013 which also included the song "Said So Often".[22]
It was announced in June 2014 that the members had signed an exclusive contract with Yedang Entertainment and were preparing a comeback with Shinsadong Tiger who would be taking the reins in terms of producing their album.[23]
On August 24, 2014, EXID held their comeback showcase at the Ilchi Art Hall, performing their new song "Up & Down".[24] The song was released on August 27 and initially charted poorly, failing to make it on the top 100 on the Gaon Chart; though it peaked at number 94 on the domestic chart.[25] However, the song slowly gained popularity in late November after a fan-cam of member Hani performing the song went viral on Korean social networking websites. Her fancam has been viewed more than 17 million times up to date.[26][27] This led to the song shooting back up on the music charts, eventually climbing up into the top 10 on the real-time charts and topping the Gaon Chart.[28][29][30] Due to the success, EXID returned to several music programs to promote "Up and Down".[31] The song was subsequently nominated for a first place award on Show! Music Core, The Music Trend, and M Countdown, in which they won the latter on January 8, 2015 for the first time since the group's debut.[32][33][34] On January 9, the group won its first public broadcast music program award at KBS's Music Bank.[35] The Music Bank win was followed up by a win at the January 11's edition of SBS's Inkigayo.[36]
2015–present: Mask King, Ah Yeah, and Hot Pink
In February 2015, EXID's Solji participated in a singing competition program, MBC's King of Masked Singer (Mask King) for their pilot episode, and became the first winner of the show, impressing the panel of judges as well as viewers. This drew a lot of attention to EXID and boosted Solji's reputation as a talented vocalist.[37]
On April 6, Yedang Entertainment released an MV teaser for EXID's title song "Ah Yeah" from their 2nd Mini Album, that features a continuation of their popular upbeat and sexy concept. The full MV was revealed on April 13.[38] "Ah Yeah" was nominated for a first place award on various music shows, and the group won their first music program award on April 21, 2015 at The Show. Subsequently, the group won first place with "Ah Yeah" on April 26 and May 3's edition of SBS's Inkigayo (The Music Trend) as well as April 29 and May 6's edition of Show Champion.[39] In May, the group made their first American appearance at the Korean Music Festival in Los Angeles, California. They performed "Every Night," "Ah Yeah," and "Up & Down".
EXID got to host their own variety program, MBC every1‘s Showtime! They featured in Showtime Season 5, after the show invited EXO, BEAST, Apink, and SISTAR in its previous four seasons. The program collates questions from fans, and the idol group will then give their answers through the show. Showtime Season 5 with EXID has begun airing in early July.[40]
EXID's Junghwa is confirmed to take her first step into acting as she's been chosen to star in drama Webtoon Hero Toondra Show as the female lead. The drama will be air on MBC every1 from end of July.[41]
On November 7, EXID won the MBC Music Star Award at the 2015 MelOn Music Awards, a major music awards show in South Korea.[42]
On November 8, a teaser revealed their comeback for their new song "Hot Pink" which was released on November 14, 2015. The music video for "Hot Pink" was later released on November 17, 2015. The music video reached over 11 million views as of December 25, 2015.[43] Following the success of their previous songs, "Hot Pink" was nominated for a first place award on various music programs, and the group clinched their first win for "Hot Pink" on November 25, 2015 at Show Champion, and their second win on December 6, 2015 at Inkigayo.[39]
