Datsakorn Thonglao (Thai: ดัสกร ทองเหลา, born December 30, 1983) is a Thai footballer playing as an attacking midfielder for Thai Premier League club Muangthong United and is a regular member of Thailand national football team. He was known for his deadly free kicks and setpieces.
Club career
Datsakorn spent his youth career with Raj Pracha between 1998–1999 and made his first senior appearance during 1999-2000 season with the club.
BEC Tero Sasana
The young midfielder joined a Thai Premier League club, BEC Tero Sasana in 2001-2002 season and eventually won the league title with the club at the end of the season. It was his first senior silverware.
After a successful season with BEC Tero Sasana, Datsakorn was given a chance to play for a Bundesliga club, Kaiserslautern on a season loan deal. On 2002, May 2 Kaiserslautern expressed their interest in permanently signing Datsakorn, which also was the skipper of Thailand U-20 at the moment.[1] However, it was reported that Datsakorn refused to extend his contract with the German side as he was homesick.
Datsakorn returned to BEC Tero Sasana in the next season 2002-2003 and led the team to AFC Champions League final but lost to UAE's Al Ain 1-2 on aggregate. The same season he also awarded only runners-up in another 3 competitions ASEAN Club Championship, Kor Royal Cup and Thai Premier League.
Hoàng Anh Gia Lai
In 2007, the Thai playmaker joined a Vietnamese club, Hoàng Anh Gia Lai. He later became one of the Vietnamese supporters' favorites after two years with Hoàng Anh Gia Lai, although he could not help the club win any silverwear.
Muangthong United
In 2009, a newly Thai Premier League promoted club, Muangthong United signed Datsakorn back to Thailand for a reported fee of $200,000 (6.6 millions baht as of 2009 exchange rate). It was speculated that, due to the deal, he became the Thailand's highest paid footballer at the moment. He settled into the former division 1 champions quickly and became a key member of the team. Datsakorn was also appointed as captain later. He helped the team secured Thai Premier League title third in 2009,2010 and 2012.
International career
Datsakorn made his debut in Thailand national team in 2001 while he was spending his loan spell at Kaiserslautern. He was first called up for U-19 and U-23 squad for a short period but became a regular member of senior squad soon afterward. Datsakorn has been featuring in Thailand national team from 2001 to present, made a total appearances of 84 and scored 11 goals.
He was criticized in his early years with the national team for his violent behavior, which led him to several sending-offs.
In 2007, Thonglao played again in FIFA World Cup qualification. He score 2 goal for Thailand in match again Macau national football team in qualification first round and 1 goal in match again Bahrain national football team 1-1 in qualification third round.
Thonglao was also a member of the victorious T&T Cup 2008 winning squad.
In 2011, Thonglao played in FIFA World Cup qualification. He goals for Thailand 2 goals in second-round match again Palestine national football team 2-2.
In 2012 he was called to almost every tournament in the national team. He was a key player in the 2012 AFF Suzuki Cup he suffered a groin injury, but had managed play until the end of the tournament.
