David Farrier (born 25 December 1982) is a New Zealand television reporter, actor and documentarian.

Film

In early 2014 Farrier began production of a feature-length documentary, Tickled, which he co-directed with Dylan Reeve. The film began when Farrier became interested in regular events being run by a US company called Jane O'Brien Media which were dubbed Competitive Endurance Tickling. On approaching the company with the intention of producing a short news item about the quirky sport he received a strong homophobic response.

The film premièred in January 2016 at the Sundance Film Festival and critical praise. The film was acquired by Magnolia Pictures and HBO for an undisclosed sum.

Television

Farrier has been a staple for both 3 News[3] and Nightline as their entertainment reporter since 2006 until the show's end in 2013.

He often travels to Los Angeles to cover movie premieres and events like the E3 videogame convention. He most recently covered musician Lorde's Grammy wins from the Staples Center.[4]

Notable interviews have included Trent Reznor,[5] Karl Pilkington[6] and Serj Tankian.[7]

In 2011 Farrier made a documentary for TV3 about the origins of the National Anthem.[8]

In 2014 he was cast in Rhys Darby's mockumentary series Short Poppies as the interviewer.

In 2015 Farrier took on the co-host role, together with reporter Samantha Hayes, for TV3 show Newsworthy.[9]

Podcasting

Farrier has an interest in cryptozoology, hosting podcast and radioshow The Cryptid Factor with comedian Rhys Darby.[10]

In 2009 Farrier travelled to Mongolia to investigate the legend of the Mongolian Death Worm,[11][12][13] and in late 2013 visited Texas with Darby to film an undisclosed project about the Chupacabra.[14]

Writing

Farrier also works as a freelance writer, covering pop culture[15][16] and travel.[17] He recently profiled actor Stephen Tobolowsky[18]

Other work

In 2013 he put on a storytelling show in Auckland, New Zealand with LA-based actor Stephen Tobolowsky.[19] He has hinted more events like this will take place in 2014.

Education

Farrier graduated from the Auckland University of Technology with a Bachelor of Communication Studies degree in 2005.

Personal life

David was raised in Bethlehem, Tauranga where he was home schooled before attending Bethlehem College.[20] In 2012, during the Government sitting of New Zealand's Gay Marriage Bill, Farrier came out as bisexual and that he was in a relationship with Grayson Coutts, the son of New Zealand yachtsman, Russell Coutts. The couple has since broken up.[21]
