Eunectes deschauenseei is a nonvenomous boa species endemic to northeastern South America. No subspecies are currently recognized.[4]
Etymology
The specific name, deschauenseei, is in honor of American ornithologist Rodolphe Meyer de Schauensee,[5] who donated a specimen to the Philadelphia Zoo in 1924.
Habitat
E. deschauenseei is both semi-aquatic and terrestrial. It is usually found in swampy, seasonally flooded freshwater areas.
Geographic range
E. deschauenseei is found in South America in northeastern Brazil, Guyana and coastal French Guiana.
The type locality given is "probably collected on the island of Marajo at the mouth of the Amazon".[1]
When this snake, commonly known as the "dark-spotted anaconda", was first found, it was given to the Philadelphia Zoo.
Reproduction
Mating probably takes place at the end of the dry season, around June to August. They can have between three and 26 neonates in a litter, with sizes ranging between 32 and 60 cm (13 and 24 in).
Pizzatto and Marques (2007) examined 5 gravid females and found the litter size ranged from 3 to 27 (x=10.6) and examined the embryos, they estimate that the young are about 0.49 m (19 in) at birth.
